Don't worry, don't worry, it wasn't your fault. If it had not pipped by now then it probably was not going to. My personal policy is to only help what has managed to pip the shell on it's own. Otherwise they are really really really unlikely to make it. So, you didn't kill it. It would most likely have died in the shell without pipping. Which is also sad but still not your fault.

i like to think of it as my animals are spoiled live a VERY good lives and loved it
so we take care of them and they take care of us.. i mean have you seen they way the beef industry treats cows!!!
oh nononono i dont support any grousery storys meats added hormons
girls getting boobs at 6.. kids going into puberty way to early..
id rather support my local farmer and raise my own animal then i know how they are treated what they eat..
i love them.. but im a compleat farmer.. i just cant handle the killing part i usally go in the house and cry... but i know thats what they are used for..
and i get over it..

I envy your attitude. I wish I could do that. I am too much of a wuss. So I eat things that others have killed, which I think is a lot less morally defensible than your approach. Good on you.

thanks cocoa... it took lots of conditioning on my part.. my husband took many years saying are you ready??
we watched things on video, the internet, did lots of research on how this country treats the sloter animals... IT DISCUSSTING!!!
did you know that here if a cow can stand up right (even if it need help) it is used for human consumption... YUCK!!
im not saying im strong when it comes to butchering my animals but i also i try not to think them as "pets" but i cant help to get attatch to them in some way..
i do not take part of the killing at all. but i can clean it and prepare it just fine..

and thank you for helping i still feel really bad i thought it was dead and when i saw its mouth open i lost it..​

Evelle- it was going to die. You tried to help, it still died. It happens. But I know how you feel. I'm like 70, if it can't pip, I can't help.

I found no evidence of Edward in the creek. It's funny though, the mailman came while I was out there. I told him I lost a duck last night and he said, "Ya, wanna know what it was? It was that fox I see out here all the time." This thing fears NOTHING.
Anyway, I thought I might find some feathers in a pile, but nothing. I didn't go into the thick brush though. Too creepy back there.

QJ can you get a fox trap from your local human shelter or wild life and game or even animal control to catch the fox and maybe call around to relocate it..
a fox just doesnt belong in the city it could get hurt.. or hurt someone.
i know my Big R has tons of traps differant sizes but cost a pretty penny

but look what its saving.... once an animal finds an "easy meal" it will be back.

Hi!!

I'm sorry about your drake, QJ. But it sounds like a food with a silver lining. Foxes are a major problem here too. They were introduced from England. Horrible pests (but good looking animals when you get a healthy one..).

So, about this duckling that won't get up. Do its legs look normal? So, no swelling round the joints (relative to the other ducklings)? Are it's feet flattened out? Are his legs out to the side or underneath him? Is it trying to stand but can't or is he just not trying at all? Just seeing if it's a leg issue or more general than that. Has it fluffed up? Is it still in the incubator?

Initially I'd be dripping some vitamins into his bill with an eye dropper. Do you have any bird vitamins on hand? You could add a little bit of sugar to the water you dissolve the vitamin powder into.

Even though it's a duckling and not a chick the sane rules apply - think of what you'd do if it was a chick.

Ok, just did a full observation/inspection and moved them to the brooder.

I think it's his head. He can't lift it. It stays down by his crop. It's weird.

His legs seem to be fully functional. It's almost like he's stuck in the "egg position". I just gave him some vitamin water. So we'll see what happens. Maybe his muscles need to stretch a little.​
