Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Her drake didn't throw all boys. The girls just didn't make it.

And you didn't screw it up. Just get a new hygrometer and give it another go. Do this hatch with your eggs first and figure it out.

My mom said its her drake that threw the boys

.... You can't win a fight with her.

I don't know if she is German. She is in Colorado and has show quality stock from holder reads. She laid them sideways so all air cells are detached, but some of the eggs look pretty fertile. I just set them this morning upright in an egg carton.

Do you milk yours? SInce I know you've milked "real" milk goats, how did their milk compare?

Oh, I just remembered, I have 5 pheasant eggs that are completely impossible for me to see into.

The one's I have now are just pets, really. I started with the Nigerians, then went into the Nubians. When I sold my herd, I kept 3 of my favorite Nigerian does. The milk was the same as far as taste and butterfat content and such. But the Nigerians don't give very much milk, and most of them have small udders and little teats. I had a couple that weren't too bad to milk and gave a fair amount. Otherwise, hand milking them sort of ticked me off, lol. I wanted milk, and it's harder on your hands to milk a tiny udder than it is a large udder. If you want plenty of milk, go for the big girls!

I suck at hatching eggs.

The one that died, well i figured out why it died!! It was a rear end pipper!! I wish i would have known that!! Well, since it was dead. I decided to open it up. When i finally got to it, their were air bubbles is the membrane. It couldn't breath, and this is when I stopped opening the bator. And said I wasn't gonna help again!! I could have saved him

.... there was no blood, nor yolk to absorb! & He was stuck, and he died, because I didn't help him.

I don't think I would have caught a rear end pipper myself. Mine all went the proper direction last time. Hoping they continue to cooperate.

You do what you can but you don't always get the result you had hoped for. Remember: mama duck doesn't do a thing other than sit and wait (and occasionally get up to eat and poop).

What do you have coming next week?????

This is a pic of my first gosling, No. 1, completely internally pipped and getting ready to externally pip. See the pink point in there? That is the tip of the beak. Also note the line drawn on the outside of shell (day 21). See how it is completely dark on the bottom past the line? That is the gosling's body.

I seem to be having a heckuva time candling my goose eggs. I just wait until I think I see them move. They are due 4/11. Any suggestions on what to look for, other than a better candler?

Have no idea. His egg is as hard to candle as a quail egg. Reddish area still looks good though and is growing, so I'm guessing ok.

Go Woody!

Evening all, sun burnt and tired after a day outside. Lots of painting and progress on the new open air pens for the chickens. No more coop for them after this weekend.
In the bator: 70 goose eggs, 2 dozen duck eggs, 2 dozen chicken eggs
In the hatchers:
American buff geese
Sebastopol geese
American Blue geese
Grey saddleback Pomeranian geese
Buff ducks
Khaki Cambell ducks
Black and white Scovy
Lavender Ameracuana
OE chicken
EE chicken
In the brooders:
Toulouse geese
Sebastopol geese
African geese
EE chicks
In the yard:
70-80 chickens (black copper marans, Lav and black split Lav Ameracuana, EE, OE, misc brown layers)
African geese (utility bred)
Sebastopols (white, splash, lilac, grey, curly and smooth also saddle back)
SA ducks
French white meat Scovy
Khaki ducks
mandarins
Wood ducks
Call ducks
Rabbits, both meat and lop
Goats both Fainting and Florida native
Adding Florida sheep.
Two Great Pyrenees always on duty

Whoa. I think I'd get a little overloaded with all those. Full-time job, isn't it?

Hey, the seller who sold me my WH eggs said she would send more for the price of shipping. Should I say yes? I think she feels bad that only a few may hatch. I think I'm gonna say no. It was my fault they didn't hatch, isn't it?

I would have a hard time saying no. To the eggs, I mean. Thought I'd better be specific.

ok, probably not her then. I'll check and see if mine was from Colorado, but mine wrapped them and put them in a special egg carton. Mine are also SQ from Holderreads. I feel an egg swap coming on in about 6 months.
