Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Oh man, CG... 15? You are going to be so busy over the next 24 hours!!

yes 15 eggs.
every egg from both chickens except 1 . it nvr dropped its air cell or anything.
13 of them ext pipped on their own but then made no progress and were starting to fade.
so now the waiting for veins to back up begins .
everyone is pretty lively right now tho

QJ, the packaging sounds very similar to how Aurora Springs packaged her ancona eggs on my last shipment. I was so po'd that 1/3 of the eggs were broken and she never offered to make it right.

If you want ancona eggs still... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE order from Thistle Down Farms!! I just cannot say enough good things about their operation from top to bottom. While their flock is mostly b/w they have a beautiful silver duck, and I somehow hatched out 50% colored babies. Pretty sure I have a blue, lavender and silver in the group too.

I HATE detached/scrambled eggs. I tossed all of my saxony eggs and all but one single SA egg earlier this week even though most were developing, because the air cells were so screwed up I just didn't feel like dealing with nursing the eggs and hoping they'd make it to lockdown... and then probably need major assistance to hatch. What are the odds that I will get the opposite gender of my SA baby from the one SA egg still going in my bator?

Ok.. I had sewer drama, had to call the city.. long story but they were able to unclog the stop up saving me thousands of dollars. Apparently we have what's called a "community line".. Whatevs, I don't even wanna talk about it.
Then I got pulled over on the way home from Easter dinner. Apparently I have a broken head light.. good to know. This cop was a DB (starts with a D ends with a Bag.) I might have gotten lippy with him.. just sayin'.
What a day.

Going to the farm. My dad and the hubs are going to help me finish my coop. We're completely enclosing the coop. I'll take pics.

And here are the ducks I hatched for my friend. (The guy Julie got her/my rooster from.)

Those guys are cute. Tell your friend hi and that the rooster is doing wonderful. We love him.

Oh forgot to add. Just candled my PR eggs and ALL 6 (because I got no extras mind you) have detached air cells. 2 look like the yolks are scrambled. The eggs were in a carton, not wrapped at all, just sitting there in the carton. With newspaper around it. Whatever!

I'll be lucky to get any hatches out of these eggs.

Makes me wish BYC had a section for reviews on hatcheries/egg sellers.

Hey guys! I picked up 3 ducklings from my feed store the other day. They ordered an assortment from Privett in New Mexico. The store clerk handed me a box with what he thought was 3 Cayugas. After I got them home (dumb me) I examined them closer and found what looks like 1 Cayuga and 2 Black Swedish???? I think? Well, the Cayuga didn't make it today so now I have the other two being all soft and squishy. Can anyone confirm what I am seeing? Do these look like black swedish to you?

The one in the front obviously has spotting on the bill and feet along with a yellow chest and wing tips. The one in the back has spotting on the underside of it's bill and on the bottom of its feet and it is barely lighter in color. Thanks!

Cute. the one in front looks swedish, the one in back khaki maybe?

HAPPY EASTER !
You too!

Marty I love your avatar! Just wanted to stop by and wish "The Hatch Patrol" and the rest of this Thread...

Happy Easter everyone!

Thanks!

happy easter everyone

went and checked babies today
had 2 that were not evn ext pipped yet.
and 6 that seemed not so lively
so they were brought inside.
all 8 are shrink wrapped
rant.gif

im going to wait an hour or 2.
and the others are coming inside. i assue thats why i have nno babies out yet.
so now i have to find a place to shove another 7 babies plus my 13 eggs on day 8. plus the 2 water containers and therm& hygrometer.
th.gif

gona be a long couple of days. but i can now see my babies and check on them every 30 seconds if i feel the need. so my panic is calming down some.
but man are the hens gona be POd.
the black hen will keep 1 egg (its air cell hasnt evn dropped yet, so its a no go.) im hoping she will accept the babiies once everyone is out.
these guys are peeping up a storm now inbetween resting and watchdog riley is back on duty making sure noone hurts them

i sure hope wednesdays hatch goes better, or its going to be a super long week im already pretty sleepy i had a restless night

Good luck!

Happy Easter everyone!

CG, wow! What a pic! Great job!!! Since most had externally pipped a day ago, they shouldn't take more than the rest of the day to finish hatching out. If they were badly shrink-wrapped, they may need assistance when going into zipping phase, as that membrane may be stuck to them inside the egg.

I had one gosling that tried to do all hatching himself, but when he started to turn to zip, I saw membrane sticking to his body.. so I rush in and swab with wet qtip to unstick.... then he zipped 2/3 but got caught up in a piece of membrane on his face, so I went in and removed it... then when he went to push out the bottom half, he was stuck in another place... so I swabbed there too. He hatched all by himself... but it required keeping a close eye and being ready to help wet down any sticky spots.

The main place that worries me about sticking is the top left corner of fat end, where the right side of babies' heads are pressed up against inside of shell. That is a tricky area, but one that seems to require swabbing with shrinkwrapped babies.

Keep us posted with progress pics!

Julie, it is an EXCELLENT idea to have a review section on hatching eggs!! How do we go about requesting one??

i think they are pretty well stuck or they woulda zipped on their own. some babies were pretty desperate they were trying to zip towards the top of the egg since they couldnt turn. its so cute it will be totaly quiet then one peeps so everyoen starts in then it slowly dies down. they all look super dark (which is a bummer, i want some snowys!!) but maybe i atleast have some magpies in there hopeing everyone pulls thru without major defect.

CG, if they are starting to try to zip... you can be working on chipping more away and getting them unstuck. (But you probably already know that)

ETA: It does look like some eggs are further along than others in your pic, but hard to tell. Can you get a closer shot of the eggs??
