Oh my, that is the sweetest little baby!

She was a nice surprise in the pasture. Momma and baby are doing well, going to fence a small area in the yard for them until she is a bit bigger.

Oh and I hope Still (SM) can get back on here soon. We shipped her a pair of Sebastopols recently and last text message said she is in love and they are doing great. Hopefully she can share pictures soon of them.

QJ and Iain your SA ducks are all from the same bloodlines. (incase you didn't know this)
CG sorry about the duckling.
Iain as far as breeding pens, the more space the happier they are. Ducks will trample any space they are gone into nothing but mud though. Using landscape edging and filling it with smooth rock to set the baby pools on will lessen the mud pit around the pool. Same for your geese, except they will over graze an area and need a new space.
Housing for geese is reccomended at 4' high and length depends on pairs or trios. You can get away with 2.5-3' high for ducks. Just remember ventalation is very important, and secure doors/windows to keep out predators.

Thanks for the info on breeding space. I will make sure the duck pens are at least 3' high and was thinking of making their run 10x20? I could set them up to be mobile, like a tractor coop? How important is putting a raised solid floor in box (for predator protection)? I assume when we get our first snow and have short days, they will be able to live as a group in the coop?

I definitely see the need for rotation yards for the geese, although we only have grass half the year. Otherwise, they will be like my horses and ganders, living in knee deep snow and grazing on hay. Our dewlaps will most likely stay in the garage pens for nighttime, which we re-did yesterday to accommodate larger birds. I hope we can keep them as one group until next spring, so was not planning to create separate spaces for them.

CG, sorry for your losses.

Marty & Sue: Glad to see you.
