Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

QJ, I agree that the dog owners have a new level of awareness of what their dog can do and will take better safety measures.

What do you have hatching? What day are they on?

You may find this hard to believe... but I don't know what day they're on ... cuz I sort of didn't write it down. BUT this is my last hatch like that cuz I started writing it on the actual egg. lol.

I just candled and I have one more pip and about half are working. I just have a bunch of DIS with this one.

Actually, I just remembered .. this is the batch I washed as an experiment to see if washed eggs have a lower hatch rate. Interesting.

One little guy is out and he is the smallest little thing I've hatched out so far. SO TINY! Even for a mallard. I might have to keep him because he's very quiet and docile. Of course I'm sure that will change here in about 12 hours. lol.

And in my defense!! I gather my eggs and set them and then think, "I need to go write that down." And then Stuff happens and I forget! lol. I blame the kids.

Other Updates: Fergie my sebbie that hasn't been acting right is back to normal. I isolated her and gave her a bunch of vitamins and the next day she was back to normal. I think she just needed a boost.

Love my goosies. Fiona, Fergie and Ferdinand are hanging out together during the day too. I might be tempted to pen them together at night.

Back to a ducky land topic... Over the past week+, I have been noticing Squeak (cayuga drake), who paired up with Twist, (cayuga duck) chasing off Caboose (other cayuga drake) if Caboose gets too close to Twist. Squeak looks like a goose charging with the neck stretched out low. Well, this morning, I looked over and saw one cayuga mounted on top of the other biting down on neck. At first I thought it was Squeak doing his thing with Twist, then realized it was Squeak on top of Caboose. WTH??
not sure you could move Twist far enough the boys wont be acting dumb

At what I spent on the eggs, will NOT be eating these!!! I might need to be committed after this is none hatch

That is my big debate. Do I split boys and girls or do I separate out breeding pairs? Obviously community living is starting to have its problems as the boys come of age.

I meant... do you incubate these eggs the same as waterfowl?
Yes same temp & humidity and all just need to be set for 21-24 days ~ I keep joking that I will be putting a pillow & sleeping bag in front of my Bator during LockDown!!! I also have joked around that I will be turning my brooder rrom in to an aviary just to keep these little buggers safe !!! Maybe I willl insure them

So you're the one bidding against me. I've lost 2 auctions on there lately. Guess I'm losing my touch.
I only bid on these Pheasants... Nothing else

Lmao. Jazz? NOT eating something? Crazy.
I will eat them when it is time to pelt the males out.... Will be a delicacy

Iain, we run 2-3 drakes per breeding flock of ducks. normally trying to keep 5-7 ducks per drake as a ratio. Only with the geese do we run pairs and trios. If you have enough girls, or can add more then there is no need to separate. There will always be the typical pecking order issues and drakes are just horny devils and will do male/male action. The ducks will do girl/girl action too if no drake is around.

Took some pictures today, but of course the juveniles and adults were on the other side of the front area and stayed there until I was done and had drained the camera battery.

Well, we partially removed the coop fence and moved their swimming pool just outside the yard area in hopes they get brave enough to explore further into pasture. In the meantime, my ganders have adopted the toulouse and are now stationed outside their side yard fence. Will probably release the toulouse to the free range flock in a couple of days, as I will need the pen for my new buff babies. I may try brooding No. 1 in garage with Chicory, though, as I am reluctant to release her back into the free range flock.

Celtic, awesome pics!!! LOVE them!!!!

My duck to drake ratio is awful, which is why I tried to run my drakes down into horse pasture away from coop. Maybe I should relocate the girls off horse property completely?
