One of the goslings can't walk now. I don't know what it is about this year but my luck really fricking sucks. I don't think I'll be hatching out anything anytime soon

I've decided to rehome all of my birds. Between my health and all of my other animals I just don't feel like I can give them the amount of attention they deserve anymore. I know in my heart it's the right thing to do but it doesn't make it any easier

. It's honestly going to be one of the hardest emotional things I've had to do in a long while.

You're still going to get on here and tell us about the rest of your zoo right?

Hello Kevin,
So sorry to hear that you are getting rid of your birds. Are you gonna keep some chickens for the eggs? I hope your health gets better, get lots of rest, it can never hurt. Good luck in putting them in good homes.:hugs

Thanks Guys

Well I've had a few perspective people come out today....major waste of my time.

Half of the people failed to mention that they lost all of their birds because they just throw them on their lake. There's no way they were getting my birds.

One guy offered a whopping 50 bucks for all the peachicks. I asked why he was trying to low ball me.... He wanted to raise them for roast peacock

. He didn't get my birds either.

Maybe there life isn't nearly as bad as I think. I guess I thought rehoming them they would have that ideal duck life. Running around eating bugs and swimming. I hate raising birds in pens but they are safe and have plenty of room. Maybe I should keep them.

Also I figured out that the Gosling had Wry Neck. It's now on vitamins

That sucks. You have to go with what's in your heart and if you can find happy home for them, then it's probably the right thing.

Oh dang. I've got two eating age pekins that nobody seems to want. Not even a feeler from someone who wants roast duck. Maybe I should just suck it up and build a bachelor pen.

I sold a lady 7 ducklings and 3 chicks last month. Nice lady, neighbor of mine with kids my son's age. Coyote came and decimated the whole flock today and I found out about it on Facebook. Even the most well-meaning people lose birds in horrible ways. But it made me really wonder if I want to keep hatching birds for other people. I'm not a caterer for a predator buffet.

We had a yard sale this weekend, which is why I haven't been online much. Met a bunch of neighbors I hadn't met before and each and every one of them had predator stories to share. I haven't lost one duck to a predator in over a year... but it's a lot of work to keep them on lockdown when I'm at work. In the end, you just have to make the choices that fit your comfort level. If you're prepared to lose birds to predators, I can understand wanting the birds to have some freedom, but in the end, it's us humans who are responsible to keep them both safe and happy.

I will take him! I can out him in with the geese & they will straighten him out

Hey that's a good idea! I was thinking about putting him in the pen with my ornery Balck Swedish drake, but he's super mean. My sebbies are nicer. Although, now that I think about it, they might be too nice. I saw one of them back down to a teeny, tiny, 6" tall Serama hen this weekend. Funniest thing ever! I was I would have caught it on video.

Seriously, though, if I decide to give him the boot, would you want him? He's pretty, but has too much color to be ideal for breeding and I'm trying to set up a breeding pen for Anconas.

Wow! Very cool. Were they local or shipped?

I can see both points of view. I tend to err on the side of caution, but I feel bad because we have a huge pond on our property that they would love. I'm just afraid they wouldn't last long if I let them out on it. Especially if they wouldn't come in at night.

Sometimes if better to simplify your life when you have alot going on, the nice thing is, you can always hatch more birds down the road! Try not to be to judgemental on how others raise their livestock/poultry. My life-stock are VERY spoiled, but will eventually end up in our freezer.... Does that make me a bad potential owner? I guess it just depends on how you look at it.

What are you wanting $$ for them? Do you want some hatching eggs or maybe some Cayuga Ducklings or something?

TRUE DAT ! I remember when I lost my chicks in the brooder then lost my chickens to my dog..... Sometimes things happen, and you learn from it.

Of course it doesn't Jaz. I know everyone raises birds in their own way and for their own reason. Plus, if I knew they were going to go to a actual good life before being sent to freezer camp maybe I'd be more open to it but it's more than apparent that most people down here aren't aware of some of the species needs. For example the guy who wanted the peacocks said he was just going to "Let the run around" until they were big enough. Anyone who did research on greens would know that they are very different from the Blues. There is no way they would stick around for him. Once he lead them out they would probably fly away and never think twice about it. To the best of my knowledge they are only 2 strains of pure Javas in Texas right now. I'd hate to see such scare specimens easy wildlife food because I let them go to a inadequate home. I know it's going to be a different story for the Geese and Turkeys. They were breed to lay eggs or be eaten. Which if other people raise their birds for that I'm fine with that. It's their birds and they can do how they please. However, I don't think it's okay for a animal raised as a pet to end up in freezer camp without just cause. If a animal raised with little human contact and is used to just basically being a normal bird then it would make sense. Eating a animal that has been raised as a pet and depends on people for extra attention and care just seems wrong to me. Then again I've been a vegetarian my entire life which is why I probably feel so strongly about it. Maybe if I had eaten meat I'd have a different outlook on life.

Just dropping by to say hi before bed. Still have 5 muscovy eggs in the bator. The two runner eggs failed just before hatching.

Kevin, there is nothing wrong with chosing your eating habits. I know many veggins who raise livestock. Many chose to raise for meat, pets, breeders. After all it is all in ones perspective on what they choose. I too would be very sad if my pet ended up in one''s freezer.
