Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

1. Bahama Silver Pintails

2. Wood Ducks

3. American Widgeon

4. I love European Shelducks but I heard they can have a nasty temperament.

You should chat with Kangababy and DestinDuck here on BYC about which get along well in confined spaces together. Some do not do so well together. All require permits to keep since they are listed on the migratory act list. State permits to keep, state and federal to keep and breed. All deaths, hatches and sales have to be recorded and turned in.

Hello Everybody, I just checked and my Khaki Campbell has a dry hatchling! (that looks like a Rouen) & another is halfway out! Yea!

Any suggestions on combining this duck mom's Babies with my Pekin's 2 week old Singleton? I noticed serious drake aggression on our walk back to the pen, so I really want to keep two seperate groups. What I'm doing now is moms & babies in the barn, all other adults outside in the pen. During the day, the adults go free range, Pekin mom & baby go to the pen. Khaki mom has been indoors on her nest. Anyone see any serious concerns combining babies? Other than of course waiting til they are a few weeks old! ? Oh, and how long will the moms stay with their babies? Will they just one day decide to rejoin the other adults?

Thank you :)

Hi Holly, I don't think having moms and babies together is such a good thing, Mamas can be pretty nasty to anothers babies so if you could put some temp fencing up and keep them together but separate that would probably be better. My Muscovy moms usually stay pretty attentive for about 3-4 weeks then they pretty much do their own thing with babies just following behind or hanging together. This is my girls though maybe other breeds keep them longer. They do all sleep together at night though as a family. I have one 14 week old duck in with her mama still.

Thanks Miss Lydia, awoke this am to 4 new hatchlings! They are precious. Three are very black, and look like they'll have large bibs of white, and white tips on wings. One looks just like a Rouen. Their mother still has 4 eggs. She seemed to be struggling to cover them all, so I added some hay to her area. Weather was chilly today so all moms and babies stayed indoors. The 2 week old is really growing but it is still to small for me to allow the drakes near it. That mom seems to be wanting to rejoin the flock. Yesterday when I took mom & baby to the small fenced area, mom just hollered the entire time, looking for a way out. So I walked the pair back to the enclosed pen area. On the way, my Jumbo Pekin Drake tried pinning the baby. I thought that letting mom raise the ducklings basically guaranteed acceptance into the flock? And after these 2 hatches, my flock size has almost doubled! :)

Drakes will often hurt the babies. It's best to keep momma separate with the babies. Or so I've been told, I haven't been lucky enough to have a broody duck momma yet. Congrats on your new ducklings!

Jazminezoo will no longer be on BYC. If you would like to chat with her, feel free to find her on Facebook. (Search under, A Rivers Edge)
