I'm not sure when it pipped exactly but it's been about a day and a half since I've noticed the external pip.

No progress?
None at all... although when I just candled ( I know I'm very bad and opened the bator, but I'm just so worried about this one not making it) it almost looked like an internal pip. But since it pipped on the side and when I opened it some and made that air sac that I don't know how I did I think maybe that pushed him up into the air cell? I have no clue. But its also not really dark enough yet so idk if maybe it was just my flashlight or not.
When you opened the egg up some you didn't seen any blood? very important because usually once to start to help your pretty much committed to help all the way but you don't want to cause bleeding, which would mean the duckling isn't ready to hatch. I don't know what you mean by you made an air sac. Also are you hearing peeping?
No blood at all. That's what it looks like when I candle the egg is like what the air sac looks like. Its like I made one but have no clue how. I haven't heard any peeping. I even put cheese near the bator and still no peeping when she quacked. I have no clue what is going on here. Should I leave it alone for now? I work tonight too so I'll be gone for about 12 hrs before I can get back to this egg. I leave at about 1030pm eastern time.
The hole that you made, can you see into it enough to see the bill? The air pocket may change shape as the veins begin to dry, but that could also change because of humidity issues and the membranes begin to shrink wrap the duckling.
The peeping usually is heard if you place the egg to your ear without any background noise.
Whatever you do, do not break any veins.
We broke our ducklings shell, in the air pocket only, enough to know what was going on. You may have to do the same. I will tell you, this process may take days before the little one is able to hatch fully. Be very patient. Keep the humidity up, wash hands prior to handling, disinfect everything before using near the egg. Best wishes!
I can't see anything when I look into the hole.. I can see a small spot of dark but Im not sure what it is. Duckling maybe? The hole is really small maybe 1/4". I haven't heard any but will check the chance I get. I wish it would of externally pipped in the air cell. It would make this a lot easier. Being in the side of the egg worries me. I wash everything with disinfectant soap and hot water. Even my hands. Thank you for your help.
Small dark spot? The duckling, I do not think would be a small spot, maybe the bill? Did the duckling break the shell first? I thought I read somewhere the duckling did, but I am confused with your statement above regarding the wish for the external pip.
Our last duckling we assisted had a normal air sac and it became misshaped and began to dip down the side, she was shrink wrapped. That is why I was asking if you could see what is going on. Ours was nine days late and had a heck of a time joining the world, but she is thriving.
Just be very patient, I cannot stress that enough. We thought we were patient on our first assists and lost the babies. If you widen and lengthen the hole, place the egg back so you can see into the egg without having to open or touch. This will help maintain your humidity level.
I hope your baby is ready to come and begins to fight its way out.
I don't think its the bill but its hard to say the hole is small and I can't see much through it. Only when I candle can I see anything but that doesn't help much either. Yes the duckling made a hole in the side of the egg. I wish the external pip would of been in a normal spot but its not. And its not in or near the air sac. This was an egg that was under my broody but my dog attacked her and wouldn't take the eggs back. I estimated the hatch day to be Wednesday but she was so iffy when she first started to sit so I have no real clue as to the actual hatch day. I think I'm going to leave it for the night and see where we are tomorrow when I get home from work. I'm just worried to do too much now and then have something happen when I'm not here to help if I need to.
ETA: I didn't hear any peeping and I seems like the ducklings bill is in the air sac?
Okay, I thought the duckling did make the external pip. It sounds like your duckling is not facing the correct way in the shell and that is why it pipped in the wrong place. If I am understanding, an air sac has now formed where the baby initially pipped? If so, this could be because the veins are beginning to recede in this area. Which, that could be a good thing. How close is the initial spot to the bottom of the proper air sac? Is it close enough to maybe connect the area when you do begin to intervene?
Off topic a bit, but we also had to with the last duckling, chip away the hard shell without tearing the outer thicker membrane, just to give the duckling more wiggle room. I did that with sterilized tweezers, bright light, and a heat lamp.
You will figure it out, just research and post here for even more assistance. Keep us updated.
