Bakin, can't wait to see them!

I had a bummer moment with my buff dewlaps this afternoon. Pistol (2yo gander) has been bullying Nutmeg (my big yearling gander) since I brought Nutmeg back into front yard last week (he was separated to spend time with the grey I want him to pair with). It finally escalated into a pretty bad fight. So, I decided to put Pistol and his girlfriend Ginger in Spirit's pen for a time out. I'm pretty sure Ginger wants to lay an egg because Ginger/Pistol wanted to go into Spirit's pen so badly I didn't even herd them. I just opened gates and in they went. They look really happy and content in Spirit's pen that I don't know if I have the heart to move them back into front yard. But that means I would have to make yet another pen for Spirit.

AND....... while I was in the pen assembling a shelter/nesting spot, I got a super close up view of how a gander actually mates with a goose.

At least I'm 99.9% sure that Ginger's eggs will be fertile from the get go.

Hi guys. So I posted a thread of my own, but was told to check here too. So, the power went out here from about 10am to 2pm and I have 15 Indian Runner eggs incubating. My question is: the temp dropped to around 60 or so, I left the bator closed to retain as much heat as possible, will I lose the eggs, or will they be ok? They've been incubating for about 9 days so far.

BTW: I searched this thread for temp problems with a bator, but with over 30k total posts, and almost 3k posts on bators alone, I didn't really find anything.

They maybe OK, hard to say. It was a short period of time really, and it's the internal temperature of the egg that matters. It's normal for them to heat off for 30 min or so daily. I guess I'd candle them again in 48 hours. If they die, dark red sections appear on the eggs, and the veining will disapper.

Let us know how it goes!

Thanks so much! I'll do that. Keeping fingers crossed that they are ok!

Cool about the fertile eggs :) poor spirit keeps getting bounced around lol although might be fun new sights and all. I am getting that trio because of fighting and she has to big of a flock, but free socialized Toulouse :) works out for me

11 inches of heavy snow on the ground... bird netting over the waterfowl gave way.... the animals are all ok... and it's still snowing
Be safe out there! It was almost springy here for a while today. Blessed to only have had one momentary snow this year, though my son is complaining about not getting to make a snowman.

Today is turning into a very good day. My 1st 3 african eggs are fertile and developing on day 5 (although it is still really early yet, so still concerned they may quit). And, I discovered my 2nd white goose has a secret nest and I got a freshly laid egg from her today. My brown goose is laying in her nest right now, so I will have a total of 6 new eggs to set later today and it brings me up to getting 10 eggs per week, with one more goose left to start laying.

Exciting!!!

they are almost a year and laying and the male apparently does the hanky panky quite well
Great news! Can't wait to see your new additions! I'm possibly getting something cool this weekend as well, but I'm not saying until I've locked them in for sure.

I've never seen geese mate. Maybe it's better that way. Saw my girl lay an egg once and that was painful enough. Hope your goosie drama is settled soon.

Hope your eggs make it through okay. I've had short power outages that didn't hurt my hatch and power outages that destroyed my hatch. Nothing worse than waking in the middle of the night and running up to my loft to wrap the incubators in blankets until we could get the gennie going. I want to get a solar-powered backup for my bators eventually.

Yay for a happy bator!

I have a backup generator is I loose power for more than an hour.... BUT they say if you do not open your bator you have 3 hours.... So 4 hours I don't know.
