Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

This week is the new court date from the great duck/goose/turkey murders from those two dogs last fall. Hopefully this will be the final court case, and I'll get some money back from all those birds. It is well over $1000 in damage.

I'll be having to dress some chickens and ducks next weekend, there are just too many now. Also, one of my small heard of dairy goats (Nigerian dwarf) had her babies, two black and white girls!

Oh, that sounds awful...I haven't found the original story (this is a pretty darn big thread!) but I'm gob-smacked that the dog owners had to be taken to court over this. I have zero respect for pet owners that won't take responsibility for their animals.

And I've only ever dressed one chicken at a time, and that was exhausting! I can't even imagine how you do multiple at once! :p

I work for a farm. We do up to 150 in a day. First processing of the season is Monday...

You guys are seriously awesome. I don;t know where I'd be without the support of this amazing community. <3

So...I candled both eggs this morning. Inside the dark one it was painfully difficult to make out but I think - I repeat, THINK I saw movement! Not positive, it just may have been detritus moving about from me tapping the egg but it's enough to keep up hope. The other egg is...well, scaring me, frankly. Still no movement, still very clear inside, still filled with black blood clots - but the veins haven't deteriorated and it's been four whole days now. I'm beginning to think that I have a zombie egg.
if you still have veins... you still have baby

Well, the incubators are all put away, and I've turned my hatch room back into a proper master closet. I'll have to find a new hatch room before next winter. :D

So, my Ancona girl has kept all 11 ducklings alive a week now (or something like that). Yesterday two co-sitting hens (a java and a bcm) came of the nest with 15 little ones. We've had to evict the goose hens from their useless nests now. Poor girls, only a few eggs and all duds. I ended up keeping 2 sebbies and 3 African goslings from my incubator. I suspect one "sebbie" to be perhaps a sebbie/buff dewlap cross. Oh well.

yay for end of season... YOU have been busy!

We are on day 28 an no piping yet so any advice is appreciated
do you still have veins? has one side of the aircell started dipping toward the bottom? do you see movement? it's there a colder spot in your bator? have you candled all the eggs? are they all in the same stage of development?

HUGS ... we just need more info to help you. Remember 28 is an AVERAGE not written in stone.

Ok you guys, I'm on day 21 with the two remaining local duck eggs and day 14 with the 13 shipped eggs that are still developing.

When is lockdown for duck eggs? I know I need to keep the humidity high, but mini Brinseas seem to have pretty high humidity anyway. I'll have a backup water source just in case.

Just a couple other things. I was having a LOT of trouble lowering humidity in one of the older eggs, and decided to take an emery board to the aircell the other day. WOW the aircell looks SO much better and is finally growing! I am wanting them to get a good size and then I will bump up the humidity again. Right now it is running dry at about 25%.

Also, I had a TON of saddle aircells in my shipped eggs. However today I candled and the majority of them have corrected and become round again! What I did was when I was turning/flipping them I decided to rotate the eggs so I was flipping the eggs the opposite direction the saddle was developing. I think that really helped!

Lock down for duck eggs is day 25, same time of day set. I up my humidity to 75% or higher. I use cut up sponges soaked with water to up it.

Congrats on getting those air cells straightened out. They can be pesky.

It depends on the duck. Lockdown for Calls is on day 23. I think there's another species that hatch later than 28 days, but I don't recall which. ...Now I forget what kind of duck Hokankai is hatching! Derp!

Looks like the air sac hasn't even tilted yet, so give them more time. Muscovies take 1 days, and sometimes so do other ducks. If your incubator temp was a little low, that'll slow them up too. So, the air should tip, and then you'll see a little beak in the white area, followed by external pipping (usually 12-36 hours later) then unzipping and hatch.

Good Luck!

Haha I'm hatching Welsh Harlequins! So I'll count on locking down in 3 days then :)

Thanks for the help!
No problem. welshies are so pretty! I've never had them yet, but I love my ancona girl. I had Anconas, White Pekin, and Khaki Campbells, but some dogs cleaned out all but 1 Ancona girl and 4 boys last fall. Mrs. Ancona, bless her heart, hatched out 11 ducklings for me, so I guess I'm repopulated there now. Lost all my Khakis and Pekins though.

Send pics when they get here.
