I am sorry you lost your hatch

But you must set some more, but learn from this one, and have a baby pop out ~ It will happen.

I may be what is considered a seasoned hatcher....

I also have had my mistakes, and mishaps. Not just from the 1st stage of hatching but Brooding, Raising, feeding ~ Hard lessons learned.and STILL learning & making mistakes.

I have a question I'm on day 26 with mallard ducks an one egg has like what looks like scratch marks not he egg could that be it breaking through?

Thank you all so much...I know I'm taking this hard, and I know I gotta just try again. I'm hoping against hope that the other egg is still alive since I can't see a darn thing in there. Fingers crossed...oh boy. This is gonna be a hard couple of days' waiting.

if he doesn't make it get some more eggs and try again before you worry yourself into not trying.

I agree. I've made horrible mistakes, misdiagnosed illnesses, done more damage trying to assist in hatches that needed no help.

And you always lose a few just because. I've found that day three is where you discover that hatchling(s) have internal issues. A duckling that looks perfectly healthy will sometimes drop on day three of life outside the egg because they couldn't properly process food.

They fill your heart with joy, but they can also break it.

You guys are seriously awesome. I don;t know where I'd be without the support of this amazing community. <3

So...I candled both eggs this morning. Inside the dark one it was painfully difficult to make out but I think - I repeat, THINK I saw movement! Not positive, it just may have been detritus moving about from me tapping the egg but it's enough to keep up hope. The other egg is...well, scaring me, frankly. Still no movement, still very clear inside, still filled with black blood clots - but the veins haven't deteriorated and it's been four whole days now. I'm beginning to think that I have a zombie egg.

Well, the incubators are all put away, and I've turned my hatch room back into a proper master closet. I'll have to find a new hatch room before next winter. :D

So, my Ancona girl has kept all 11 ducklings alive a week now (or something like that). Yesterday two co-sitting hens (a java and a bcm) came of the nest with 15 little ones. We've had to evict the goose hens from their useless nests now. Poor girls, only a few eggs and all duds. I ended up keeping 2 sebbies and 3 African goslings from my incubator. I suspect one "sebbie" to be perhaps a sebbie/buff dewlap cross. Oh well.

This week is the new court date from the great duck/goose/turkey murders from those two dogs last fall. Hopefully this will be the final court case, and I'll get some money back from all those birds. It is well over $1000 in damage.

I'll be having to dress some chickens and ducks next weekend, there are just too many now. Also, one of my small heard of dairy goats (Nigerian dwarf) had her babies, two black and white girls!
