Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Never seen anything like that before!
I think I would post that pic on the Emergencies Thread, and in the meantime try Epsom Salt Soak or Compress, might help with that swelling.

No, he's the only one in WA state. There's another I've been in contact with but she's all the way out in Illinois and I'm not even sure if she still has any left for this season. What really gets me is Dan (the breeder) knew that his calls needed help hatching but never told me until it was too late. He breeds show quality so their bills are just too small to crack the shell. If I'd only kept candling and watched its activity rather than locking the incubator and walking away I might still have a baby. I know, I know...hindsight is a real killer. I'm still going to try and get a call duck this season, if only I could find someone that had viable eggs. But this late into summer I doubt that I will. :/
That's really bad form he didn't tell you earlier. Did you go nuts at him? I think I would have!
Just had to post this.

that is so sweet!
Hope I'm doing this right. Someone else suggested I ask this question here too. Originally asked it on the duck thread: Duckling with swollen webs?

Anyone seen this before and know what to do... if there is anything to do? Hatched today, Muscovy. Only one foot is like this.
Cripes, poor lil thing. I've not seen anything like that either I'm afraid. I used diluted tea tree oil on everything as its antibacterial, it may help. Keep us posted. Did it hatch out with it like that?

No, it didn't swell up till a few hours after he hatched. Momma duck kicked him out, so we've had to take him in (heat lamp and all, thank goodness I still had everything set up from the chicks). He's not doing too well. :( Got him to drink some of the vitamins and electrolytes last night a few times (was up till 3am) but this morning when I tried again he's not responding hardly at all... just lays there on his side with eyes closed hardly peeping. I'm at a loss at this point. I'll try the Epson salt soak on him and see if that helps anything. I'm doing all I can till the vets open back up tomorrow so I can call and see what they think. Thanks for the ideas. Keep your fingers crossed.

It sounds like he might just have something wrong internally. The swelling looks like it could be edema, and that could mean it's an inborn error of some kind. Sometimes mama's know best :(

I've read a lot of posts lately where people talk about using tea tree oil on their ducks... be aware that it is toxic to birds. If you want a natural antibacterial you can use medicinal honey or hydrogen peroxide.

Well, the duckling didn't make it. :( I'm leaning toward infection. The other foot started some swelling and looks like one of the eyes too. Thank you for all the advice tho.

Ou that's good to know thanks. I use it on my cats and dogs and they're ok

Really sorry to hear that :( hugs to you.
You guys weren't kidding...these guys do grow fast! Jasper is 3 days old now
Wowie look at him! So cute!

oh I love your pic...I was reading through this thread because someone suggested it...I'm hatching duck eggs for the first time...I bought them from someone who had already been incubating them...some are different stages...some look ready to hatch...they are very different looking inside than chicken eggs....I'm a bundle of nerves every second worrying...I had some chicks die in their shells over the weekend and don't want a repeat with my ducklings!! seems from reading the water fowl are more particular to temps and humidity!
