Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Hey guys...you can vent sex muscovies right??? I fell prey to a muscovy duckling today. There was a farm that was selling them, and I went to check them out, and I had wanted a really broody duck...long story short, I bought the tiniest little one they had, and she looks like maybe she'll be chocolate pied, if that's the correct term.

Anyway. I only wanted a girl, so I decided to vent sex them. I double and triple checked this one, and she doesn't seem to have boy parts, but the problem was, I checked seven others too and I didn't see any boy parts! I've been vent sexing welsh harlequins, pekins, and even three black swedish ducklings this past year and I've always always seen some boy parts. I've only been wrong twice. Still, eight out of eight seemed to be girls. Now, the mother duck hatched 20 ducklings and they only showed me eight...but what are the odds that all eight they grabbed were girls!?

Still, I took the smallest one as an extra precaution, and she really really doesn't seem to have boy parts after three sexing attempts, so fingers crossed. I'm calling her Chocolat, and she's adorable.

oh I love your pic...I was reading through this thread because someone suggested it...I'm hatching duck eggs for the first time...I bought them from someone who had already been incubating them...some are different stages...some look ready to hatch...they are very different looking inside than chicken eggs....I'm a bundle of nerves every second worrying...I had some chicks die in their shells over the weekend and don't want a repeat with my ducklings!! seems from reading the water fowl are more particular to temps and humidity!

Good luck! Staggered hatches can be hard, especially since you have to have such high humidity for lockdown.

Hey Marty!

I just moved all the 'lings to different housing arrangements. I had some escape artists in the lot.

10 more days until next hatch. Too quiet.

Oh wait, I lied. I might have a gosling in the morning. But I had an oops. I dropped the egg as I was moving it to lockdown and it cracked a little in the middle and bled. Been checking on the little one pretty often and it seems to be recovering.
