Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Right now they are just babies, but I plan on making really cute deviled eggs later. I'll sell some adults/chicks, I have a few friends who like to eat quail. Plus they are fun to hatch, and only take 17 days, so not so much waiting.
Not to mention they are cute TINY babies ( I can't imagine how small buttons are, I have coturnix). They zip quick, and POP right out. I was watching, and didn't see any hatch. I wouldn't see any pips, would check back and there'd be a baby running around. I did see one come out, but not zip. I looked just in time to see the egg lid open, a chick come tumbling out, the egg shut, and the baby was already running around.

Button quail, and I would guess bobwhites and other wild quail do. Coturnix have been domesticated for quite awhile though and it's pretty rare for them to go broody. So I get to have the fun and hatch for them. At least if I keep my incubator and brooder full with quail it will stop me from hatching ducks/chickens. Well, it would if my chickens would stop going broody.

Can you let your quail free range with the chickens and ducks or are they too small?

Think I'm caught up now!

QJ, those ducklings are gorgeous. Hope your chicken is doing ok.

DG, glad to hear that all your little ones are getting along well! I'm sure they'll be thrilled so see you when you get home though.

Beautiful Saturday springtime morning here! Watching the ducklings and ducks outside.

Saw pics of your Swedes on another post and they sure are pretty, it would be so hard for me to decide on another breed of duck there are so many beautiful breeds out there.

when I got my muscovies, the first ones came from the river as cast offs, I did not even know there were so many breeds of domesticated ducks.

So where is everyybody at tonight? I have to finish baking pies for the bakesale tomorrow. Thn I might try and get some sleep. I have a weird feeling about my surgery on Monday and that's not like me. Its weird

So I have 3 new chicks. So that's 7 total. One is kinda funny looking. He was covered with some funky sticky stuff. I have no idea what it is. 2 more are pipping.

SM- Don't worry about Monday. It will be fine! And you'll be on the road to recovery!

Well they may not get to do surgery anyway. I am sicker than poop. I have to get better before monday because I need to have this surgery. Not only did I break the plate in my toe, I know have gangrene in that toe. That's probly why I am so sick. I have to feel better on monday or they won't do the surgery. So I will probly be in bed the next 2 days before I have to stay in bed for 4 weeks. Joy oh joy.

They can't free range, they don't stay and would be little snacks for everyone. I have an old baby crib I converted into a pen, they only need 1 square foot for bird so they don't take up much room. They grow fast, they hatch in 17-18 days, start laying at 6-8 weeks, and are ready to process at that time too. They make neat little noises too. Can't wait until mine are big enough so I can hear what a quail's crow sounds like.
