When I called fish and game to ask what to do with a raccoon if I caught one they told me either lee's summit or raytown animal control is the only one who will accept pests, and it is illegal to transport or release them. They never called me back and told me what I should do in Kansas City though... we ended up drowning the ones we caught in a drum of water.

I would call fish and game, I believe they also have traps available for rent. It was spring when I called, they might not be so busy now and actually get back to you. The lady I talked to was very helpful with everything else, she told me what predators are normally around and what kind of traps best for them, etc. She just didn't know how I was supposed to get rid of anything I caught.

Lol, I still hate calling people I don't know. I realize I'll probably never meet most of them, I have no reason to care what they think or be shy, but I still am.

My quail are due new years. I don't know if the eggs are fertile since they were their first eggs, and I can't see anything candling quail eggs. My ducks aren't due until January 10. I can see them swimming all around when I candle.
Even when you have a bunch of kids around all the time it's rough, lol. My girls have me worn out from the last few days. I'm ready to sleep tonight!

With the raccoon - what people do here with feral animals if they can't shoot them is gas them with the car exhaust. This is usually done with feral birds but it'd work with anything. You put the trap with the animal in it behind the car. Cover the cage with a tarp or something similar. Direct the exhaust into the cage. Run the engine till the animal is dead. You are meant to do it with a cold engine. It is painless for the animal.

If this raccoon is removed will others move in to take its place?

DG! Yay!!!!! Ancona!!!!!! Baby baby ooo!!

SM just cuz you hate yOur sons actions or decisions and sometime want to strangle them doesn't make you a bad mother make you a mother who knows a potential that has never been met.

It took me forever to figure out I had a drake, size won over voice, but again I have muscovies so they don't say alot anyway. I know what your saying SM today we get our Grandkids for a week, and even though I love them to pieces it's so hard to have them, especially when not use to it. But we'll make it through and will be rested up by summer when we'll do it again

Glad to see you back QJ I was worried about you and hoping you had a plan. But you know coons are in multiples and get rid of one there will be more. Why not just make you pen and coop like fort knox and that way you don't have to do any killing. just a suggestion of course. We have been living with predators for a good long time and because of hardware cloth haven't had any losses at night. Can't wait to see your new coop.

and DG go ahead and call her, you'll be glad you did.!!

Hey everyone!

DG- I hate calling people I don't know too. So I know what you mean!

Miss Lydia- I think you're totally right. I have a feeling this was a young coon, that's just a hunch. The woman who lives kinda behind me has chickens as well, she told me that there is a coon that lives in the water/sewage big drain thingy at the end of the street. I've never seen it, but I believe her. At first I thought this was that fox again. But that little hole it made to get in there is way too small for that fox to get in. I've actually seen the fox and it's HUGE. It actually looks more like a coyote. It's the weirdest lookin' thing. But anyway, I think you're right in that the coop just needs to be more secure. I guess I was just in disbelief that a coon would come and get in there because we ARE in the city, but then I read something in a thread here that said when you're in the city you almost have more of a problem because what wildlife we have isn't as afraid of people. That makes sense. It's just that initial shock that gets you. As long as my dogs are out nothings coming in my yard. My 2 dogs are wonderful. I have a black lab that is 11 yrs old who doesn't let anything near my fence. And I have a yr old golden retriever/german shephard mix that is the same way. I just like to bring them in the garage when it's cold outside. So they aren't going to be too happy with being out.

I'll figure something out.

70- I don't know if that question was for me or DG, but my parents live about 15 to 20 minutes East of me. They have a farm on 63 acres. My dad has a problem with coons getting in his sweet corn. In fact, last year when didn't get ANY corn because the coons came in one night and ate EVERYTHING. It was crazy. There was a trail of about 400 ears of corn that led into the woods across the street. And nothing left on the stalks. So for Christmas this year (ironically) we got him some electric poultry netting from Premier to go around the corn. We'll see if that works this year.

Last year he put up a string of electric fencing probably a foot high around the corn, AND set traps. And they still got through. We'll see if they can outsmart this webbed netting though.

But anyway, if I trap one, I'll call my dad and see what I should do with it.

He will probably say, bring it out here and I'll take care of it. There is also a wildlife rehab place next to him that is huge. I could release it there, but people frown against that. I guess I have to catch it first.

SM: Just love him and pray for him. That's all you can do.

Sorry, most of this was me rambling. I have a penchant for rambling. It's what I do.

Oh I left out. SM: Baby duck is doing good. I feel bad for it because it was born right before Christmas so it hasn't been properly spoiled. We've been too busy! But it looks like a strong healthy little guy. The other egg I need to candle and see if I can guess it's due date from 70's diagram.

QJ, yeah, I meant your Dad.
smile.png
Was wondering if he was close enough to take care of it for you. Sounds like the answer is yes!

I agree that coop reinforcement is the way to go though. Just gotta make it impossible for them to get in.
