Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Both my babies quacked at me. They are both girls for sure. They aren't even 5 weeks old yet, I was thinking I had another few weeks to know for sure.
The little duckling is still working his way out. I wish he'd hurry so I can open and see what's going on with everyone else. My digital thermometer was reading funky for a few weeks, and since putting in new thermometers I'm thinking my temp was low and they may be late.

Here is my new ducky, The hen is doing a good job. She hasn't taken it to the food and water yet but I;d expect that sometime today. You can see its head poking out under her wing. It's black - meaning the duck who I thought was the mum is not the mum (mum = mom).

I wouldn't get any closer, she looks pretty mad, lol. Bet she makes a great mum.

SM, this is taken from Pete's thread:

The 2 ruptured air cells eggs were incubated vertically until Day 21 then kept at an angle of about 60-70 degrees until pipping. By Day 21 the amount of free fluid had reduced and was only visible at the lowest point of the egg. As the fluid was not contained within the membrane both eggs lost weight at an increased rate and the humidity had to be raised to compensate. On internal pipping the aircells appeared abnormally large and weight loss was at 19%. The outline was irregular but both were laid horizontally for pipping as there was no free fluid visible.

Cocoa, cute pic! Love how protective the hen looks!

Julie, I thought we were supposed to be able to tell girls starting at 2 weeks because of voice changes... you mean it will take longer?? And... go baby ducky go!!

I just got my Saxony eggs in the mail. :) One was broken. She has them wrapped in kleenex then put in a plastic egg tray thing, and then surrounded by pine shavings. Interesting wrapping job. I saved the plastic trays to put directly into the bator so they're sitting up for the first 3 days.

She sent 3 extra too. I would recommend this seller. Oh! And she sent me a free copy of "German Life" magazine. Kinda cool.

just wondering because i am new at hatching, what is the benefit of having them sitting up for 3 days? is the fat or pointed side up? and do you still turn them when they are upright?

Hey Baking!

I set mine up for the first 3 or 4 days so the air can raise to the top, if the air cells are detached. Also so the veining can set in good. After that I keep them at a tilt for the rest of the duration. Same reason just a smaller scale.
I don't turn for the first 3 or 4 days either. Same reason as well.

Are you hatching anything right now?
