Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Here they are! Everybody is out of the brooder. Blacky is still tired, but he's hanging in there. All 4 are drinking VERY well, so I'm not worried about them.

Also, this is the first time I've tried the contact paper for the brooder box and it is awesome. I won't use anything else from now on.

Awesome pics, QJ!!! They are adorable!!!!

I was thinking of getting contact paper for the initial post-hatch tank... now you have me sold on it.

I LOVE it. There is no slippage, no dust from shavings, the access water goes into those little holes so they aren't standing in it, and it absorbs heat so it's warm to the touch.

LOVE LOVE LOVE!

I don't know if you have a dollar general, but that's where I got it. Nice size roll for a buck. I'm going to check walmart next time I'm there. (I avoid WM like the plague... )

Celtic: Just did my morning mist/cool, check air cell loss on goosies. I have them labeled BYC 1-4 and Ebay 1-2. BYC #1 looks similar to a duck egg on day 21, where I can see the veins still in upper portion. It is the furthest behind. BYC #2 is my smallest egg and I am seeing shadowing and pulsing on membrane in back of aircell, but the air cell drop is not very good. BYC #3 looks pretty full inside and is rocking the most. The aircell drop is ok. BYC #4 has the biggest aircell change and looks good. Ebay #1 & #2 both look good in that they have larger aircells overall and they look really full inside.

Since they are starting to roll to air cell side upwards-most, I think I should stop turning. I've also been trying to keep my humidity under 40%, but I am not seeing the kind of drop rate as duck eggs for this stage. So, yesterday I did the mist/cool twice and I am planning to do it 2-3 times today. Is this a good plan?

Isn't it great? I use shavings or a puppy pad underneath and it soaks up everything. Take the shelf paper out and hose it off or toss it and put new stuff in.

I was wondering if I could hose it off. Cool! I love the puppy pads. I'll put one under this stuff, I didn't think of that!

Whatever helps! Messy duckies. Worse than kids!

I throw away the ones in the incubator, but the ones in the brooder the first few weeks I just take outside and hose off and spray with bleach water and let dry.
I don't know about worse than kids though. I woke up to the biggest one watching tv while the two little ones had dumped out my dresser, laundry, closet, and everything they could in my room. Very quietly and sneakily, I woke up and watched them a few moments before I saw everything they had done. They got a sharpie too....
But they are gone now and I get a few hours of peace and quiet to clean up before I go play in the mud and try to catch a duck, lol.

Good point. I just noticed the fruit loops in the living room...

I hid ALL sharpies!! But I have some interesting art work on my wall. :) And when they say permanent they aren't joking.

Is muddy duck gonna give you trouble? Sorry!

I admire and respect your strength! Like a kindred spirit, I can see you now... getting bucked off into dirt... slapping your hands on your jeans to help get the dirt off.... then climbing right back up to do it again. Speaking of which, just for you, SM... here is my #1 boy, back when bucking was his favorite way to get out of cantering.

Well, gees...I'm ready for a leg up, please.

Misting twice a day or more to gain aircell space is fine. Some aren't as text book as others with their air cells, but helping the issue along is never a bad choice. If they are trying to make the turn then yes I would stop turning them so they aren't fighting the turner while prepping to hatch.

Very exciting you and QJ going into lockdown before me with goose eggs. The weather is just perfect here today. Strong breeze, no rain so thinking we will work on some fence panels today.
