Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Latest update. Ducky # 4 hatched well. Ducky #5 seemed stuck in the zipping process, so we gave it a check and saw it was turned wrong and stuck. So we zipped it enough for him and he is working on hatching out now. Ducky #6 pipped in the wrong end and hubby is about to start assisting with the hatch. I checked 2 eggs that were moving but had stopped. I think they are dead, but I pipped the air cell and put them back in just in case. There are three left that were the farthest away from hatching at lockdown. I will check them out when hubby is helping the other ducky and will pip for them too. Sigh. This is where things get hard. Fingers crossed I get more than 5 to hatch!!

Go little duckies, go!!! Fingers crossed!

Ducky #5 hatched on its own, but its body is really kinked up from being twisted wrong in his egg. Really hoping he will unkink now that he is out of shell. We have zipped most of ducky #6, and are giving it a little bit to see if it can finish on its own. Don't think any of the other eggs are alive, but I pipped them, just in case.

It's not looking good for the last two. The one we helped is all backwards and looks bad. Hubby is already facing possibility of putting it down. We have been helping the last egg that pipped on wrong end, but it started bleeding quite a bit, so it is back in bator. Hubby doesn't think we can help it anymore, but hopes it will make it out on its own.

On the bright side... I have 4 adorable new baby duckies, and the goose eggs are getting ready to pip... Hopefully that will go better than this hatch.

Thanks, chicks. The last ducky is hatching out by itself right now. Hoping it will be ok once it is freed from the shell. I'm so tired and just want to go to sleep... But I can't until I know how this last ducky fares.

Really glad you got four, Utah. Hope the fifth comes good. Fingers crossed here.

Glad you liked the t-shirt, QJ. I know you said not to but I'd already ordered it, LOL. Hope you enjoy having Mick Dundee displayed across your...body.

The last ducky finally made it out. It is exhausted, but I think he will be fine after a long rest in the bator. The malformed duckling is still not good. Hubby and I decided though to wait until morning before deciding to put it down. Which brings up the question, what is the best way to humanely end a hatchling's suffering? Snap neck?

One last update for tonight... The first goose egg internally pipped around 2am. This fun gets to begin all over again in 2 days.

I'm glad the last ducky is in with a fighting chance.

A quick way to euthanise a duckling or chick is to quickly snip through its neck with a sharp pair of scissors. Not at all nice, but precise and quick. Or quickly press its neck against a sharp/square corner (like the corner of a bench) using your thumb. I've never done either of these but would do one of these methods if faced with a similar problem. I hope the duckling comes good and you can avoid this.
