Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Hubs usually just does the "la-la-la I can't hear you" routine. Except when I told him I was thinking about buying hatching eggs. Then the lecture began... "Don't pay for shipped eggs until you're sure you can get the first batch to hatch... blather-blather-blah-blah-blah."

Little does he know I already ordered the eggs...

me too he thinks i am doing 24 eggs for the hatch along, little does he know it is more like 54-55! go big or go home i always say!

Candled my RIR eggs today, and thought 2 were dead, so I threw one out is the pasture, didnt crack though. Then droped the other one on the ground to find that it had a live baby chick in it

so I started crying, and ran down to the pasture to try and find the other egg. Couldnt find it, so I ran inside, completly crying.my eyes out, mumbleing to my mom that I killed baby chicks, so me and my brother ran down the pasture to find it. Finally found it, and put it in the bator. It completly KILLED me to see the tiny chick just laying on the ground with its tiny little heart beat

awwwww im sorry..
it happens to all of us

99.5 is actually a bit low for a still air. 101 is not too high. If I had a still air I'd incubate at 101.5 (measured at the height of the top of the eggs).

If they were not your eggs then things that are out of your control could have been the problem - inbreeding of parent stock, for example. Or nutrition.

It is a good idea to verify that your thermometer is correct though. Or a new one when you get a new one. Bear in mind that if you check it against another thermometer you don't know which one is the correct one. The best thing to do is buy an expensive thermometer or one that has been calibrated as accurate by the seller.

It's so heartbeaking when a hatch doesn't go according to plan :(

thats kind of odd when the paper that came with it says 99.5
??

thats what i keep telling myself. its not my fault.

and i have 4 thermomoters in there right now.
lol i just put in a digital that we know is correct.(corresponds with the thermostat for our house) to see what it says.
2 of the plastic one agree with eachother at 101.
and the metal one says 97 (after its minor freak out!)

I had problems with my temp too. Yay, I can't wait to see your geese! Hopefully you get a good hatch with your calls.
