Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Air cells make a dramatic change anywhere between days 22-25. The baby is turning inside the egg to get ready for hatching... as it turns, it causes the air cell to make a dramatic dip. This is the time to lay the egg, with dip side facing up, and stop turning.

If you are hearing peeping, your duckling has internally pipped. If you see a raised dimple on shell, a crack, or even a piece of shell chipped off, then it has externally pipped. Make sure your humidity is up over 70%.

Best of luck!!
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I am heading to walmart to get a backup humidity reader to make sure about the humidity in the hatching incubator but have added wet wash cloths in addition to filling the water trays in the LG. I have not removed any of the plugs either.

Okay so if I see things moving in the air sack area (briefly like a head or beak stirred by the light) these ducklings have internally pipped and should be moved to the hatching incubator. I feel bad for the one that was in the egg turner...

I'm quickly understanding counting days is secondary to candling observations.

It is like human babies.... some are born premie.... some are late... some are breach... etc. There are no set strict rules for when to stop turning or when to raise humidity. The babies tell us with careful observations.

Awwwww....... I just got a surprise package of 2 toulouse eggs from Erin.

Her timing could not have been more perfect after the day I had yesterday!

Hey everyone! Would you mind giving me a current update? I really don't want to go back and read a zillion pages. How are things going for everyone? Jaz told me everyone has been going through a rough patch.

I can finally join in on some hatching fun. I have:

4 of my own coturnix quail eggs due to hatch on the 1st

2 dozen replacement roux/red coturnix quail eggs coming in the mail from quaillady today to be set

13 Cayuga duck eggs set 2 days ago from my local lady.

2 Ancona ducklings coming home next Saturday

There have been a few precarious situations that ended badly. Almost everyone here has lost something this week.
Then an old man tried to burn Utah's house down.

The good news is.. Next week will be better.

Oh.. those of you with turkey. What do I need to do differently at lock down. Is it the same as a chicken? And what is their gestation period?

So far, today is going much better! I have my other set of ancona eggs beginning to internally pip, I am seeing my goose eggs on day 23 starting to rock, and I got a surprise gift of 2 more toulouse eggs today from a sweet byc member, Erin. I need some duck eggs rushed out to me so I have more than 2 eggs set to hatch.

In other news, #2 and #3 of my africans turned into really mean things overnight and are attacking No. 1 and Ebay. No. 1 and Ebay both have bloody wings. I figured I'd put them in outdoor duck pen... as I guess it is time to turn them over to my geese. I am watching very carefully at the moment as they get used to each other. The goose seemed to hiss and snap back at No. 1 whenever No. 1 attempted to get curious, which freaks me out. The gander is being a sweetie. But now that I am inside watching through window, she is coo-ing at them and the goslings seem to be getting used to the adults circling round their pen. At least the goslings are not biting each others necks and wings now.

Thanks, Eyeheart.

Egg #6 has officially internally pipped. The beak is in the right place too (thank god). Will be doing hourly checks on the others that look to be in the process of internally pipping.
