Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Hubby with his buddy.

Except a few patches of fuzz and pinfeathers in their wings the calls are feathered out. The geese are almost there, and looking very gooselike now.

Isn't today your BIRTHDAY???

Yesterday, lol. Although I am still suffering. Went to the casino with my sisters, hubby, another friend and had too many drinks and ate too many crab legs. I've been dragging all day today, and all our kids were here last night so the house is trashed. I had a great time though. Thanks everyone!

Air cells make a dramatic change anywhere between days 22-25. The baby is turning inside the egg to get ready for hatching... as it turns, it causes the air cell to make a dramatic dip. This is the time to lay the egg, with dip side facing up, and stop turning.

If you are hearing peeping, your duckling has internally pipped. If you see a raised dimple on shell, a crack, or even a piece of shell chipped off, then it has externally pipped. Make sure your humidity is up over 70%.

Best of luck!!
How long could it be between seeing a dimple and the duckling putting a hole in the shell? It has done more in the initial dimple spot as well as a second area towards the bottom of the egg in the air sack area. It has been 24 hrs... and my humidity is good in the hatching incubator. This egg does have a large air sack and we saw movement this morning when we candled the egg.

Second question: When I can see movement in the air sack area, does this mean that part of the duckling is out of the membrane or can they stretch the membrane into the view of the air sack when you shine the light on it?

Thanks!!

It can take my normal ducks a day or two to go from pip to hatched.

If you see them moving in the dip area, it doesn't mean they are internally pipped, the lining is flexable, and they wiggle. If they are still active, and working now and then, I'd give them up to a day past due date. If they are slowing down, or no movement for like half a day, you may wish to make a tiny pip hole, but keep the humidity up.

I would approach assisted deliverys with caution. Have you done a search for Petes completed waterfowl hatching guide??? If not, I would before doing anything more.

Yes, I read through it. Very advanced and I was going to take mostly an unassisted approach to these eggs with the exception of maybe poking a small hole if needed. This one I am talking about is only on day 24 but it made a dimple yesterday in the egg turner. As well we have heard some peeping and seen some rocking but not a whole lot. This is my first time incubating and these are mix-breeds from our flock so I'm not sure about everything but it sure is exciting! Normally we mail order ducklings every year for the kids' Easter but this year decided to try and hatch some of our own. We have definitely got the hatching bug so I'm sure we will be ordering special eggs soon enough.
