I used a stainless steel nail (sterile) to poke tiny holes to start unzipping for Lucky, and also for two buttons yesterday. It keeps a big oops from happening. I just lightly tap tap like a baby would, and watched for an ooze....
I think if you go real slow, taking a long time, and remembering that he's not in too big of a hurry if he can breath, you'll get him out safely by dark, and he may be happy to help, once he sees their is hope.
Use your patience and excellent judgement. Especially the patience.
Hey...I see where some people use sharpies, or felt tip pens on their eggs. Is that safe to do on bantam duck eggs? I use pencil right now, but the sharpie would be so much easier to see.
ok. so eggs are in the bator =)
19 right now.
whatever else is laid tonight or tomarrow will go in.
one has wax on it. it was laid outside and has a small crack in it. no oozing and looks normal when candled .
so who knows.
now to figure out hatch date =)
hahah wow major blonde moment.
these dates will be easy.
tomarrow is day 1 , aka the first of the month ,
I hatched 4 out of 4 little SQ cochin chicks (hoping I got a little blue roo out of that) but the runners didn't have such a good hatch. I had two that internally pipped but they never externally pipped. and then two more never internally pipped and the last one had not internally pipped either so I went in to help and after opening up the membrane it's breathing got pretty labored so I left it alone for 30 min and it had passed as well.
I should have never tried them in the new bator...... I've got all my duck eggs in my old trusty now. I guess the one will just be for chicken eggs and the old one will be my duck bator from now on. Anyway, I've got another set in the bator last night and will try this again in another 28 days.
Here is my toulouse baby now... happy to have a bigger hole and be uprighted. He is screaming up a storm and trying to keep working at his shell.
I have a sinking feeling that my other african egg may be wrong way too.... giving serious consideration as to how best to handle that one before taking any action.
ETA: Took advantage of steamy bathroom to give african a quick candle. His beak is near the sweet spot. WHEW!!
