Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

It may sound gross but sharp kitchen shears. Hold baby in bag, snip neck. Don't look. You'll fell better if you don't look (I did).
You are far braver than me.

There is no way I could do it. I wish they had some quick way. When I fed my snakes at college, I had to put the pinky (baby) mice into the freezor, that was the offical way there, and I felt like a murderer. I would rather have just put them in live, and let nature be what it is. I have a personal thing about harming living things. (even spiders)

Personally, I would have to put him cozy, and leave the room.  I'm just not good at that part when they are little.  If they live, and have issues, I grow them to eat, but then its easier.  With babies its horrible.

Your kindness and sensitivity is what makes you a BYC Friend, DG.  You can't help that it hurts you.  :hugs

Hes just laying there... Eyes closed, slowly breathing... Do you think he hurts?... If not, im gonna let him be... I will only cull if he is hurting...

I cried before I had to do it and then after. But it had to be done. Luckily the farm has toughened me up a bit. A few years ago, I would have never gone through with it.

You still feel awful no matter what. It's not fun losing a baby animal.

Sorry I don't honestly no the best way to break the neck. I've never had to cull a duckling
Kevin, how is the best way to break the neck of a duckling? I would have felt better not doing it the way I was taught.

(On this depressing note, I have to go cull some muscovy drakes tomorrow who are humping the farm chickens)

I will wrap him in a warm towel, and let him sleep.... I need to do dishes before mom gets home :hit .... I'll talk to you guys later I guess :hit

DG, I am really sorry this is happening to you.

Over at my end, I am trying to not think about the one African I lost and focus on saving the four that are still going. I almost have their heads free. I hate trying to work in this spot the most because they are smashed up against shell and I am so worried about making them bleed. So far so good though and they are all so sweet trying to help me when I work on them. They want their heads freed really bad.
