Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

They will be 9 weeks old on Thursday. There is Twist, who sounds like a duck. Then there is Caboose and Hershey (my ancona), who both have a quiet whispy/whistle sound. Finally there is Squeak who up until a few days ago sounded like Caboose and Hershey, but now sounds like a soft fog horn... almost like a low honk?

I'd call a low honk a quack. Mine are 8 weeks-ish and 1 female (the him/her) has been quacking for over a week, 1 white I heard quack yesterday, and the other white I haven't heard yet.

But now that I think about it.. that white one did have a funny sound like you say before she quacked.

I would describe it as a nasaly sound. Or like, ya know when old men blow their noses real loud? Like that.

Hi girls! How are we all today?

Minor improvement (I think) for the baby quail, this afternoon he appears to be bending his legs, where until now, they've been stiff behind him. Now, He can lay a bit more comfy, anyway. This morning I leaned him by the water, and he was eager to drink his fill. He's drinking, eating and pooping, so still there appears to be dim home for him.

I've started moving his legs around, and trying to help him stand, but there is no strength in his limbs yet. I guess if he's willing to eat and drink and wait, so can I.

Its funny seeing Iain and QJ discussing sound variations in quacks. LOL. Thaks for the pick-me-up!

I come from a long line of old farmers and storytellers. Just bear with me.

QUESTION: My sweet cayuga, Squeak, who turned 2 months old yesterday, has been making a foghorn type noise the past few days.... each day is louder and I swear my ears are playing tricks on me because it seems like it is starting to sound more Twist, who is definitely a girl. The other two boys have been getting quieter with more a cross between a hiss and a whistle. Is it possible that Squeak is a girl???

Beekeeping?? Of course that makes me want to share a piece of trivia. Utah is "the beehive state".

My ducks are only a month old and some of the Buffs have started a very horse honkish sound
hmm.png
they really sound like they need something for a sore throat

I'm just now trying to pay attention to the sounds they make. I'm trying to get this whoopie cushion sound that ya'll talk about down. They all sound like whoopie cushions to me.

I LOVE honey. And it's hard to find the comb around here without paying 5 million dollars. Plus my dad has a bunch of clover growing in the back pasture. AND I think it would be cool.

Honey comb is pricey almost make you want to find some wild hives................ ALMOST

Love the baby squirrel!

We raised a couple one year, when their momma got squashed on the road. We named them Sandy (yes, Spongebob's friend. Our kids were little.) and Peevy (my dad named that one). We had so much fun with them, and even after we released them, they would come back and chatter for pecans.

You know, I faithfully catch up on this thread every day. It takes me awhile! LOL
somedays I just give up and say hi

Squeak is a girlie then. I always describe the girls voice as a honk, when they start honking you know they are girls.

Yes, squeek could be a girl. Mine don't settle into their voices until month 3 and 4. I don't use voice for sexing until the beginning of month 5, to be honest Iain. I've had them change up on me through the fourth month, of course most settle in at 8-12 weeks, but not everyone all the time. I've had muffled quacks become raucious quacks overnight, it seems. I wouldn't really on voice for gender ID until the first day of month 5 for Khakis or Pekings. But with Khakis, the males start to show colored heads and the first curling tail feathers in the third month, and I definately rely on that for them. With the Pekings, no choice but voice, they don't always get a curl until even later. I havn't had Cayugas in 7 years, so I don't remember their particulars, except they can fly.

Got things all worked out and will have me some Ancona ducklings coming from Holderreads Old TSQ line.

This will be my best bet for good quality in blues, lavenders, chocolates and silvers probably get a couple blacks in there also. So now I'm less worried about the PR silvers coming. Although if I see any really nice ones from them I'll be keeping them otherwise I'll probably be sending them on down the road. Next year is going to be a very good year for my Ancona breeding program.

5 itty bitty babies

and this is mommy when still pregnant.
my pretty girl hazel, she only has 1 eye. (a couple years ago she got an eye infection and now has no eye )

Oh one more thing... Ancona boy is now trying to mate with the boy silver appleyard. (??) He's not gonna get far there.

So far he's pretty much mating with anything BUT the female ancona. Maybe he doesn't like the looks of her. I happen to think she's pretty.
She's not easy, lol. My khaki girls eggs were fertile over a month before hers started to be. Maybe he just hasn't impressed her yet.

Thanks! I had one a long time ago named Parker that lived in the backyard for a few years.
