Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

New question from my hubby. :D

Hubby would like to build a double size outdoor pen and combine our 4 nine week old ducks with our 4 six week old ducks. Do you think this is a good idea? What is the best way to introduce the two sets of ducks?

In the past, I've introduced the new babies to my older ducks by putting the younger ones in a wire dog crate outside, then inside the larger duck pen. That way everyone gets a good look at each other before they're all turned loose together.

I'm with QJ, I always introduce new ducks to a pen with them in private cages for a few days, then I put them out togather in the evening, about a half hours before I shut them up for the night. Its enough caos that they don't seem troubled be each other. At this points, yours should be close enough in size from here on out that you'll hardly know whos from which hatch soon.

Thanks. I'll just keep them in separate, but adjacent pens for now. Fortunately, 5 are anconas and each look different enough to be able to tell them apart. But it can already be a challenge at times to tell the 3 cayugas apart!

Hi girls! How are we all today?

Minor improvement (I think) for the baby quail, this afternoon he appears to be bending his legs, where until now, they've been stiff behind him. Now, He can lay a bit more comfy, anyway. This morning I leaned him by the water, and he was eager to drink his fill. He's drinking, eating and pooping, so still there appears to be dim home for him.

I've started moving his legs around, and trying to help him stand, but there is no strength in his limbs yet. I guess if he's willing to eat and drink and wait, so can I.

Its funny seeing Iain and QJ discussing sound variations in quacks. LOL. Thaks for the pick-me-up!

What would be even funnier is to hear them actually make the sounds to each other in audio. Oh wait...howabout a duckling quacking competition?
