That's great. I hope the third comes back too.

So I have the 4-3 day old quail in my brooder and decided to bring my docile/sweet italian hen in to meet them. Watching her like a hawk of course. She has been around juveniles before but never babies. She did very well. I left for a couple minutes, came back and I couldn't find 3 of the 4 babies. Then, they started popping out from underneath her. Aww, it was so cute. They just love her. She seems to be enjoying them too.

I have never had a hen go broody before but this kind of fills that void for me. LOL

I got 2 back. One hen still missing, but at least I have a pair again.

DD dropped a baby quail like 3 days ago. Its actaully eating and drinking still (with help getting there) but can't use its legs at all. They've been very stiff, but today they move a bit. He's slowly getting weaker, due to laying down constantly. Have you ever encountered somethign similar? Any thought on how to help it? Its a fighter, and I want to do all for it I can.

Advise appreciated, from any relavent experiences with any fowl any of you may have had. I may have to start a thread but there is so much information here, that I'd rather here whay my friends have to say frist. (Thats all of you, even the lurkers, fYi )

No idea, other than keeping it warm and fed/watered as much as possible. Really hope the chick pulls though for your dd.

How neat. I would love to have a broody coturnix.

Oh no! That is horrible. I have never encountered such a thing and I have a 2 year old that isn't always very gentle. I would probably give it a few days and if NO improvement it could be paralyzed and I would cull. If there is improvement of any kind it probably just needs time to heal.

Thanks guys. My basic plan has been offer all possible care and comfort, and it simply refuses to die so far. I figure it'll eventually die or get better, but I thought it might have been sooner. I can't cull, unfortunately, DD is tied to it and prays for it every morning in school prayers (catholic school), so I can't in good conscience intervene negatively. I know I sound like a dolt, when I read back, I'd probobly advise someone to give up, with so little encouragement. I guess I'll hope the more mobile legs is a step in the right direction.

Well, Celtic was a sweetie and listened to Squeak and the gang over the phone for me this afternoon. She says Squeak sounds like a girl!
