Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Rachel, thanks. She is doing a little better today and is happy to have a grey dewlap buddy, but not warming up to hubby or me... Can't say I blame her.
Cute duckling! Is the mark on beak and face the coloring? Otherwise, it looks like my Cayuga hatchlings.
Jaz, glad you got a great Cayuga ratio! Did you get your fancy eggs yet?
I have recieved my Fancy eggs !
1st box $71 for 3 eggs.... 2 cracked (box leaking) noted by my PO..... When I spoke with them again today. INSURED .... Now I get to submit a claim... OH WHAT FUN!

& I found out even though you get insurance it does NOT cover delayed delivery. Only broken etc contents.... SO if this was my GUINEA egg shipment & it had insurance I would still be SOL !!! ( I would be crackin me some eggs)
But I did get my impeyans ($255 for 5 eggs

I am seriously hating the post office right now.

I would be sleeping with my bator too if I had that much money in hatching eggs in there. Hell, I'd have an alarm to go off every two horus to check on them. Best to get me a straightjacket than to get me expensive eggs.

EVERYTHING gets insured now, no question about that. If the PO wants to juggle my eggs they will pay for them. I really want some pretty birds to put in this aviary we are building in the next couple weeks!
& am picking up a 9' round pond/stock tank for my geese! Then I want to stock it with fish so they can go "bobbibg for apples" so to speak!

In the aviary I am buying really cool plants & running power out their & all! Will be fun to build, & bought some grass seed that is edible & desirable, so gunna be tilling to. I will post pics of my progress if you guys want?

Yes!!!

Jaz, look for reed grass, red millet and there is another seed the name escapes me but give it when I grab the bag from outside. They are edible, hold up to traffic from feathered critter feet too, and provide coverage. Also make sure you install electric wire around the very top if you use a flight net as the top. It stops most predators from climbing the sides and trying to get in from above.

We have built two flight pens, and will be building third. They are a ton of work, but so fun to sit and watch the birds when they are done. Post pictures as you go. There is a thread here on BYC showing off aviaries too if you haven't seen it before.

Congrats on a fun day of vent sexing. Triple check those older geese as it is very hard to get a boy to pop once they are feathered in (the size of the ones you recently posted) and there have been many "girls" who we're really ganders that just didn't pop.

I'm a little frustrated with my last two hatches, but maybe someone can give me a little advice. You may have read some of my issues in other threads and I will try to be brief. I have two Pekins, my male is around two years old, and my female is around seven months. She started laying in March and I've been collecting eggs since then. I incubated 23 in April had around eight at lockdown doing great and one had pipped. Only one hatched and it had a bum leg and died a day later. I invested in a turner and kept strict watch over my humidity with this next incubation. I had seven at lock down, four had pipped, one hatched on day 26, and he is doing great. Yesterday I heard more cheaps and had one egg moving around. I checked those eggs today, day 29, and the other six died in the shell. I don't get it. I had my temp and humidity right. The eggs were fertilized and developed. Why out of 28 eggs am I only getting a 1% hatch rate? I've ordered the Stories guide, but I'm getting really discouraged. Could it be that my female is young? Should I give them vitamins to help the babies? Any help will be so appreciated! :)

Just got back a little while ago from a farmer gathering. They had Joel Salatin give a talk. Good stuff.

Returned home to utter chaos. I need to get my hubby away from the children before he ends up on the looney bin. So I took him outside, pointed to his money pit boat and told him he was going fishing next weekend or else. The "or else" option is that I'm sending him off to the farm to volunteer on the weekend helping fix tractors. I want him out of the house.

What feed is she on?

What feed is he on?

Free ranging?

Access to water?

Jaz, Oh my!! I thought I spent a lot of money on my dewlaps... but your fancy bird eggs cost more than my entire dewlap flock. I can't wait to see pics of your aviary in progress and the babies when they hatch!
