Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

I'm not a big fan of Porsche either. I'll make hubby think of a new name.

What feed is she on?

What feed is he on?

Free ranging?

Access to water?

She is on FRM 15%(I think) Layer Pellets, I threw the bag out and have it in a big container, and he eats the same. They are cooped most of the day, but are let out often. They have an endless amount of fresh water and swim frequently.

Iain Utah "cr8z, What was the size of aircell at lockdown? Did you perform eggtopsys on the dead in shell babies? Did they internally pip? Were they in final hatching position? Was the inner membrane dark and gummy in texture or white and plastic shrink wrap looking?

The aircells did not look like the one that hatched, which had expanded greatly and had the slant, but they were big. I just done an eggtopsy on two, and it looked like the one had internally pipped and it's head was in the aircell. It was all bundled up with the beak pointed at the aircell. The inner membrane was white and plastic looking. The other had not internally pipped yet but was formed and I just couldn't dissect the others. I'm sorry, I'm afraid my stomach couldn't take much more.

And FYI I'm using an LG incubator with still air. My temp stays around 99-100, (my thermometer will not read in points), and my humidity will fluctuate between 45% and 55%. At lockdown my humidity was between 70% - 80%. I do not mist my eggs.

Bummer! Sounds like shrink wrap problems, not fertility. It is extremely hard to maintain humidity in an LG still air (I know, because that is what I use in a desert!) Also, it is easy to get false humidity readings depending on how/where the gauge is placed. Best I can tell you is to seal the lid better to bottom and add a damp sponge into each corner, in addition to filling all the reservoirs.

Also, with still air, you want your temp to be 101 (2 degrees higher than of your bator had a fan).

Thanks to Celtic, we have a name for our expensive girl... Diva! Here's a pic of Diva with Tank, her new best friend.

I know, it's so frustrating. I have two diapers in there including all three reservoirs full and right now I've got my humidity up to 54%. I'm also going to try misting my eggs this time after day 4. I'll up my temp too. All I can do is see what happens! I hate this trial and error, but I guess its expected until I can figure out what works.

On a better note, my little guy, who I named Hercules, is doing well and I'm so proud of him.

Am I just heartless?

So today I was taking the dogs out and there was a cat on the drive. Fairly normal but I went over to investigate. It ended up that it was hit by a car. It's eyes were blood shot and spitting up blood. My first reaction was to grab the gun and put it out of it's misery. Before I could make it to the door, the neighborhood old man came over to look at it. (He basically takes care of all the stray cats and calls them his own.) He ended up taking it with him and stayed with it before it passed. Should my reaction been so quickly to dispatch it? Am I really that heartless? When he picked it up it was crying and meowing and I'll admit it pulled at my heart strings and I did cry a bit. I haven't had the guts to go over and ask him if it's passed yet.... I'm not sure I honestly want to know.

Thank you Jaz! It was my intention to hatch some ducks to sell, but my goodness, I'm a little attatched.

lol
So cute, & I know I have let cute ducklings go in the past, & I have to remind myself that if I am getting top dollar for my birds then I can always hatch more! Unless you are trying to establish a breeding flock or project! But that just me spouting hot air

I would have reacted the same way if you know the animal is in "bad" shape (& we all know what that is) , UNLESS you are planning on taking it to the vet & footing the bill. Otherwise to me it is just suffering....
