A couple of my new calls:

Blue fawn and blue butterscotch.

My fearless LGD: Nothing is gettin' by this dog.

. They're all so cute! And love the puppy!
Oh and I forgot for GQ:

Pics of my Holderreads order that came a couple days ago.

Silkies, Cayuga (they sent 2 extras so that makes 5!), and 1 Appleyard to add to my trio. I ended up getting 3 Blue fawn, 2 grey, and 1 snowy silkie.

You can see my one chicken that hatched in the background. Who now thinks he's a duck.

ok guys i have been gone for quite a while lost my place so i may have missed a few, but you have been warned this is going to be MASSIVE!
I don't know. They are mostly black at one week. Need to find a new trout runner egg supplier now.
Glad your call girls (did I just write that, sounds a little... off) are laying (okay, really off) again!

Guess who's been on ebay?
th.gif

I messaged the seller and asked them to write "Fragile: Skunk Oil" on the box in big letters. The eggs weren't so pricey, so I figured I'd mess with my postal idiot.

I need to stop hatching.
gig.gif
sounds like a good idea!
I'm a bit blue. Thought I'd come hang out with my fellow hatching geeks and drink some beer until I feel a different color.

Yes, lets hope so!

Today when I let the Khaki babies out with the gosling gaggle, they were trying to bully my buffs! That didn't last long, one of the more inspired gosling quickly put them back in their place. Is so funny, on our early evening romp, I've got 7 toulouse, 4 khakis, and now 1 tiny sebbie all following me around. The ducks really follow the goslings, but they will come up to me if I'm still while they are snacking in the grass. (I spend all my time counting babies over and over to be sure everyone is present and accounted for.)

SO, guess who set a passle of eggs yesterday? Um hum, yay, your talking to her. quail and ducks.

Oh, some nameless DH or DChild, peeked in on the pheasents in their cage in the garage. So, for the second day in a row, I was trying to catch pheasents. It was easier in the garage. Last time It was my fault, and one got out in the yard. (Tuesday). It took about 2 hours to catch the thing. I can see why they are successful in the wild. It flew onto roofs. IT flew into ponds. It hid quiet and still in the patch of native grasses. We finally squished it to the ground with the pool net.
rant.gif

Hi Kevin, still up?
sounds cute! what a PITA!!! i need i pool net for my teenage chickens
I'll get one tomarrow. In fact, I keep wishing every evening that I had my camera on the walks. The babies are sooo cute! A fine mixed group of ducks and goslings chasing me around the yard is a kodak moment. Oh, and I feel like a goose mama.
big_smile.png
I love that if I squat down, all but the ducks run up to me for their petting.

Even the sebbies will wander very close, except diamonda who resents the constant attempts to cure his angel wing. I'm proud to report that the wrap has been on for two whole days now, and doesn't show signs of unwrapping yet. 12th times a charm, apparently.
love.gif
i really need a new camera card!
I would like to share some pics of my new mare, Ima Sandy Star, AKA Sandy. I had to put my gelding down, because he was losing his foot. I haven't been around much lately because of dealing with him, and being so depressed. This girl came into my life last Sunday, and though she isn't my baby boy, she very much needed me, and I needed her. Her hooves are in need of trimming really bad, and the farrier won't be out till the 16th. She needs some weight, and lots of love, as she's been standing in a pasture with no attention for about 3 years. She's a sweetheart, and I already adore her!

sorry about your boy!
hugs.gif
she is so pretty!
Got back from vacation Tuesday and have spent the last few days cleaning up and getting everything back in order. BTW, NEVER go to the lake with a 1 and 2 year old. Not fun at all. Hubby and 7 year old are still there, will be until tomorrow. I couldn't take it anymore and missed my birdies so packed up and came back early.
Remember my ugly little black EE chick? It has finally got feathers, although still not as much as everyone else. I'm also still clueless as to if it's a boy or girl, but have decided to keep it either way because it's turning into a pretty neat looking chicken. It has a white beard, lol. Anyone want to help guess if it's a boy or girl?

It looks like maybe it's getting saddle feathers but it's comb is smaller and not as pink as my 2 that I know are pullets. And all my EE's have always looked like they have saddle feathers, so I really don't know, lol.
sorry you had a rough time! cute little bugger
.
Roo? I love this one. His legs match his feathers, if only he had a blue comb too.
lol.png
I'm not entirely sure about him either though. His comb is smaller and not as red as than the one I am for sure is a roo, but there are 3 rows. Doesn't matter what he is though if the black is a girl, since I'll be able to keep both then. I couldn't decide if they were both boys which one I wanted.
not sure but really cute!
Julie, unless blue starts leaking gold or red/orange on its neck and shoulders and or saddle area then its another hen. We have a blue EE roo, was very slow to grow and mature, he is now getting gold hackle and saddle feathers. We also have all blue hens both dark and light in color. Take a sheet of printer paper, hold under some of the hackle and saddle feathers to see if they are round (hen) or pointy (roo). makes it much easier on an EE. Oh and the first one (black with white beard) if its from ours birds it could be an OE (olive egger) chick from an EE hen and one of our sons BCM roos.
does that trick just work for ee's or all chickens?
We are back from the vet! My injured buff girl is doing great. The swelling is gone and everything looks nice. We are to finish up her antibiotics, but otherwise she got the all clear for turnout tomorrow to live with Barley and company. Yay!!

As for Spirit.... vet thinks she is doing better than she expected. Her hips and legs are staying nice and straight, she does a good job keeping her club foot under her, and has overall very good balance. Vet trimmed her nails to eliminate them accidentally catching on things. She is at good weight, but approves my cutting her back to 16% mazuri only (which I did a few days ago) and no additional supplements necessary. She thought she was building callous well, and said to not wrap foot for better traction now as it is important she develop a solid callous on club for long-term traction. She said it was good for me to hobble her last night to avoid the overnight laying in a side split position, but to avoid using hobbles whenever I can and instead more carefully control exercise time.

For now, she must continue to live inside house in her small brooder pen (with a companion) and we are to take her outside for 30 minutes per day for important sunshine vitamin d, exercise and callous building on club. Vet said it is really important for sunshine to build bone and callous on club for better traction, but we must keep her restricted and quiet to lower risk of tearing muscles/tendons.

Vet said she will have her good days and bad days, because she is growing so fast which changes her center of gravity and weight bearing load that we must take it slow. We will bring her back in 2 weeks for follow-up.

Vet was full of smiles and quite pleased with both of my girls. Hope we continue to have good progress!
thumbsup.gif

Thanks, Julie!! Glad to have you back. Sorry for the hellish trip. Can't say I blame you for leaving early!!

Dutch, I know. And I feel even worse for the sacrificial companion gosling so she is not alone. But the key is to build strength and callouses slowly as she develops and the first 12 weeks are the most critical. If we do it right now, then there is a great chance she will eventually live a normal outside goose life. I may do an article if things work out the way we all hope, but this is the only thread I write regularly on about her progress.

By the way, hubby opened buff and toulouse yards at the same time for round up to put in garage for night. They all trooped so cute together that I think we will put them together, at least for day time turnout.... but not for a few more days. We are putting buff girl and the two boy dewlaps out with Barley in the morning, so we want them to adjust to that group before merging them with the bigger toulouse. Our side yard will look adorable with a flock of 9 babies running around.
forgot what i was gonna write, but happy they are getting along and buff girl is doing better!
I've got a few new fluff balls this evening.

Bantam Lavender Ameraucanas. What in the world would you ask for these cute little things? Not going to start keeping chickens and they were a bonus with my silkie duck eggs.
cute!
Here are some photos of the new babies and the "'incubator tester" eggs I bought.

One Muscovy Duckling and two mini silver appleyard ducklings,

The newest muscovy duckling unless more of those eggs hatch...mama duck abandoned the eggs after the first three were born. I will have to get some photos of those soon too. The incubator has already come in handy.

The new mystery eggs I bought...at least a mystery to me. I sent off an email to find out what I was sent. The picture colors are not quite right for the next two photos.

We have another successful merger of goslings. We put Platinum (injured buff girl) with the two grey boys out with Barley & Co. All that is left inside is Spirit and her bestest girlfriend Ember. They seem to enjoy the space and are not stressing about the others gone. I caught Spirit stretching. First a full extension with wings flapping and then standing one-legged on knob, stretching out other leg. Her balance is especially good today.

Hello Guys!!
I finally have some good pics of my Rouen ducklings and the one with a nice crest. These are out of my Colbalt Blue Drake.
This is a Pic of the Blue drake
What do you think? They are my first hatching of the Rouens. I have another pen with a Green headed drake. Your opinion would be great to help me breed only good quality.
beautiful!
P.S. here is my Green headed drake and some of the other ducks.

Okay guys I need some advice immediately. Bruce hatched out 6 for 6 this morning. However now when if a baby starts running she hisses and bites it. Is this normal behavior for mothering?

yay for bruce!

Well been busy busy ! All my pups went into their homes this weekend, it was bitter sweet

Today we bought 2 ~ 300 gallon rubbermaid ponds

They are going to soooo loved by my ducks & geese!
very cool!
I think I may have found a way to help Spirit! In my research, I found that the company Teva made a custom shoe for a penguin whose foot looks just like Spirit's foot. So, I hunted down the specific person who works at Teva who designed the penguin shoe and called him. We had a great talk and he said he would like to help my goose!! I sent him pics and he wants me to trace the foot and send him the outline, then he will look for samples of different materials. He will be in town for the big trade show in August, so we have a goal to have something to try to fit on her when he is here.

I really think if Spirit had a shoe like the penguin, she could live a normal life with the rest of her dewlap clan.
fl.gif
wow that is amazing!
Thanks Dutch and GQ. I'm trying not to get too attached since their not really "My" babies to raise and I know letting her raise them is defiantly taking a chance of losing some.
fl.gif

Shannon, glad your vet is going to take more action... and how sweet of your hubby to take your baby there.
fl.gif

Sue, love the pics!! Squishy is adorable! I remember when he was hatched, too. So cool to see them grow up!

Dutch, here is a link to the Santa Barbara Zoo's page on their special penguin. It has videos and a detailed sketch of the shoe design. http://www.sbzoo.org/animals/lucky-penguin
very cool!
MY POND .... Still have plants & stuff & some decorative tweeking...

THEEE BUILD ....

I know they are not as big as I would like, but maybe I can put in a 2nd ??

NOW this is my second pond in my other area which we are keeping above ground

There 2 covered shelters they are 4' x 6' each with UV roofs

Playing in the pond
droolin.gif
you should enter the byc duck pond/shelter contest

Thanx all! It was fun to build, and even more to watch them doing ZOOMIES !! The slope isn't completely done, I would like to put a few decorative stepping stones. The slope stones were only $1.07 each so it actually wasn't bad at all. The river rock was only $18 for a truckload. & I got to utilize a junk tire

I love my doggies. I'm down to 2 after losing both my boys to cancer this year. My house feels EMPTY with just my Golden in it (my mixed breed that was dumped 7 years ago is not house trained, so he's strictly an outdoor dog).

What kind of health checks do you do before breeding (OFA, CERF, etc)? My next 2 dogs will be a Pointer and a Lab, but I will probably get another Golden some day. My hubby likes the reddish gold color like yours and our Lilly. I like to keep a list of possible breeders for future reference.
smile.png

Have you looked at the AKC-Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) database? It's very cool (I think). I was going to submit my Pointer's DNA a couple weeks ago, but I lost him the day I printed the paperwork. I love it because it makes it easy to really check out a litter's family health history. Also, you can search by breeder and see if all the dogs they're breeding are healthy.

Something else I recently found, which you may already know about, is a letter to give to your vet from the Golden Retriever Club of America. It's asking the vet to submit samples from GR's with cancer, to help with cancer studies. http://www.grca.org/health/index.html

Lilly is loving being queen of the house. She's always been at the very bottom of the totem pole. Oliver never let her get on "his" couch. OK. I'll stop with the doggie-talk on the duck thread.
so pretty

Hey guys! Just poppin' in to say "Hello" again. I hope all is well and I really don't have the patience to go back and read all the posts.

wanted to share this picture, not the best feathering since its post breeding season, but they are fun to take pictures of.

This is Jubilee, an early spring curly Sebbie girl, has lovely feathers spilling out all over and will be a very curly girl

This is Ripple, a smooth Sebbie girl just starting to get her back curls growing in.

Cotton, 2012 (smooth)gander. His coloring is yet to be determined. He has lavender flecks all over making him appear splash from behind.

Celtic if my birds are half as beautiful as yours, I will be well satisfied.

Ya'll keep me laughing on here, the more you insult each other the happier you all seem to be. It makes me feel right at home.

Beatrice had an awesome night, I let her graze for about 20 minutes when I got home yesterday on some very fine grass, then she ran everyone else out the pool and had it to herself for about 30 minutes. She got out of the pool and began preening in the late afternoon sunlight. She did a few wing flaps. I cleaned her living accomodations and put her up. She took a dim view of that. I fed her some well watered down feed and refreshed her water bowl. Then I took care of the rest of the critters. When I checked on her before bed, she had normal, fresh green grass poop in several places in her enclosure. Hallelujah! She had eaten some of her food. She was "talking" to me non stop. I also discovered in one poop spot a brown, rubbery, piece of either paper or bedding. I couldn't tell which. I even retreived it and washed it off. Don't laugh! Its not that funny! I couldn't tell for sure what it was but it looked kinda like a big corn flake. I decided not to do any taste test! I went to bed and slept like a baby for the first time since this started. This morning she had finished her food up and was begging to get out. Appropriate poop was much in evidence!!! I of course, had to come to work. I am so happy that she made it. This afternoon, I am going to let her stay out longer and put her up one more night and tomorrow I will try to put her back with her flock. She is one tough little cookie! She is smaller now than they are and her skin is hanging very loosely but I bet she catches right up. She is still telling them that she is the BOSS! If ya'll want me to I'll try to type up a summary of this event and how I treated her (with appropriate credit to all my BYC friends who gave me such sound advice along the way) so we will have it for reference somewhere in case someone else needs it. It may not be neccesary but you never know.

Thanks again everyone for your support, especially you Janet! You were always just a phone call away!!!

super busy today put in another big raised bed (dug out the hill a bit, built the box, filled, and planted), made a bed for my friend that i will drop off and help plant sunday, did a mini's dessert buffet for a bridal shower last weekend, trying to finish a graduation cake for the town that i have to drop off tomorrow, trying to catch up on cakes for work, and have 2 more possible jobs

oh and i got a new duck on tuesday (10 month old Khaki Campbell) she is so sweet and has decided to go broody so she is stealing the chicken eggs and gaurding hers
th.gif

we got her about an hour away because early tuesday morning something attacked and took away my last female, leaving only my poor little Scotch. I heard it (right out side my bedroom window) and saw her get thrown to the ground but by the time i got out of the house i heard one last quack down the hill, hubby went down the hill with his head lamp and a stick to find whatever it was but there was no sign
hit.gif
so the person i am planning on getting ducklings from said she would sell me a female, and she is perfect
love.gif
i have been making them go into the new shed house at night and i let them out in the morning Hazel goes right in and has been spending most of the day in there but Scotch is not a fan i have to spend 1/2 hour -45minutes chasing him till i finally get him in
