LONG day here. Spirit lost all mobility with the 2nd cast, so I went back to the vet this afternoon to have it redone. The vet attempted 3 different types of casts, each with slight improvement. Then we studied all the before/after pics I brought with me and he decided to intentionally immobilize her to torque the heel and outside toe, as he believes it will really help her. So, she will have to use the sling and be on pain meds for the next few days. But looking at before/after pics, we are both very hopeful that this will substantially benefit her in the long run. As the vet emphasized, we are not trying to get her to be able to walk well right now. Rather, we are trying to correct her feet/legs so she can walk normal for the rest of her life.

I hate seeing her uncomfortable, but sometimes we have to do what we have to do.

Janet, These pictures brought tears to my eyes. Not good because I'm at work. LOL! I know its for the best and I trust that vet but she looks so vulnerable under the gas. Looks like good results though. Shannon

Since I've sold my gander my little girl has seemed a bit lonely. Since it's been too hot for me to spend much time with her outside, she's been coming in for visits.

Julie, it looks like you are in the little girl business! They are all 4 too precious for words.

Thanks, guys! I think we are making progress and Spirit continues to keep her amazing good nature and friendliness through it all.

X2 here too!!! If I may inquire what are the vet bill or is he doing this for educational purposes. I love all of my animals but with a very fixed income this would be hard to swallow if I had to pay. If you don't wish to say I totally understand. The improvements are fantastic!!!!!!!!

Approximately $900 to date. In fact, I was joking with the vet that she still has cost less so far than the purchase price of one horse, although I expect that amount to climb considerably in the next 1-2 months. Yeah, it hurts me financially, but it is not the first time I have dipped deep or even blown my life savings for a pet, whether it is a horse, dog, cat or goose.... only to work extra hours to build it back up.... and repeat.

I appreciate my mindset is extreme towards my pets and some might say my priorities are twisted. But to me, my pets are my kids. Spirit is extra special as I was born full term premie breech and had feet/leg/spine issues. I wore casts on my feet for my 1st year and steel braces on my legs until I was 4 years old. By the time I was 5 years old, you'd never know it. My parents were (at that time) on a very limited income, but they probably didn't question if it was worth all the medical bills to fix me.

Thanks for answering, I totally understand as I have had health issues all my life and still do today. Most of the vets around here are pay first or want to send you to the University where its even higher priced. It makes things hard to treat so we usually have to find older or more natural methods. Sometimes they work and other times they don't. Good for you!!!

Marty....diamond earrings? I could have had diamond earrings?! What was I thinking?! LOL Actually, I am not good at spending money on myself, per se. I spend my extra money on my critters, or to get additional critters. In fact, just today, I bought new split reins for my mare's headstall.

Celtic....hope hubby has a favorable outcome with this new direction in his care.

Julie....so glad you are having success in your ducknapping venture! Those birds probably think they've gone to heaven!

Utah....I can see the improvement in Spirit's foot! That should have been done the first time you went to the vet. I hate that she is having to go through all that. I hope it continues to improve! I'm still paying on my vet bill for my gelding.

If I missed someone, I didn't mean too. I'm exhausted tonight. Our temp today was 105, and very humid. We are expecting triple digit temps for the next week, and no rain in sight. I've been busy outside for the last 3 days, doing all sorts of things. (all having to do with the critters, of course) And it's miserable. I can't believe it's not even July yet and our temps are so high.

The poor geese lay around in the shade all day, panting. I'm getting ready to move the last of my indoor brooder babies outside...yay! Tired of looking at and cleaning brooders!

Shannon you are too cute with being worried over selling any animals. I have refused sale this year to someone because I knew it wasn't a good situation. We have housing for all of our birds, and always working on housing. We have to because of the hurricanes and predators. No since in serving up duck and goose to any of the many predators by neglecting to provide safe over night housing. We have live stock guard dogs (2 great Pyreneese) and we still lock up the birds. Hubbies mandarins and wood ducks stay in their flight pen 24/7, the guinea and Muscovy will be moving to open air pens this summer. I figure the dogs are great, but cant be everywhere all of the time, so to lessen the work load all the domestic ducks and all of the geese get locked up. Housing makes testing day easier too, we can move from house to house and then when done we can open the yard gates to turn everyone loose. Fall Sebbies most likely won't be listed here on BYC, but on the Sebastopol forum and our website.


Julie those birds are HUGE! I have a set of leghorn eggs in the bator just because I wanted to see bigger chickens. Those you are looking at though look to be even bigger than the foghorn eggs.

Kevin, hurry up with the zoo already. I had wallabies years ago, loved those little boogers.

Windy out this morning, but NO RAIN! Deby needs to start moving though because a stalled weak storm is worse than a moving low grade hurricane. Flooding all over, watching for word from others on if they need help or to move birds. Our rear pasture is completely under water again, the front has a large "ponding area" in it too. Made for mad chickens and in heaven ducks and geese. Grass is growing so fast now even the large number of geese we have can keep up. Mowed the entire rear yard yesterday between waves of rain. The front needs trimming, but standing water will prevent that for now.

Celtic (and all) I really need to get those pics for you. I keep saying I'm gonna take pics, but I also keep not doing it. I always leave my phone (with the camera) inside when I'm doing chores.

I hope everyone is having a great day. Its supposed to be 102 today. Another afternoon fill up for all the thirsty birds hanging out in the shade. They and I both wish we had A/C. Gotta love the pros and cons of the older home.

Its always good to pay back kindness in like fashion. Besides, shes gonna be so tame with such perfect feathers that you'll be able to get her a goosie diaper, and go visit folks in the rest home, who are always delighted to be visited by pets of all kinds. Then Spirit too, in her own fashion, can pass on some of the hope and joy you have given her.

And I'm pretty sure they'd like your horses too. The nice folks at the resthome we visit, bring flowers and pets too adore it when somebody brings a horse, or mule, or even a goat. Its so fun to see them out there talking about their childhood animals, and wonderful therapy for them
