Wulf, I'm so happy shes home!
Kevin and MissLydia, I personally have never known an embden or chinese goose that stayed remotely friendly to anything other than other geese (and not all of them) in my life. Now, I personally have never (and shall never ever) allow either of those onto my property. My mom loves geese (and those two are far and away her favorites) and uses them as watch geese as much as anything. They are by the driveway entrances in large pens on either side. Absolutely noone comes to the farm without them knowing about it. When I was a kid, I got caught in the goose house by the embden parents snagging eggs for my mom. It was NOT a pretty picture. Other than during mating season, and offspring rearing, the geese were ok mostly. NEVER EVER during those special times. I'd lay good money on all of them being intolerable when mother nature takes over. She just blessed them with extra protectioin upgrades, I'd say.
My embden girl is incredibly friendly. She comes up and actually "asks" for petting. She walks up to us, stops right alongside you, opens her wings and leans down into you until you pet her. She goes for walks around the backyard, and prefers the kids company to adults. She's never hissed or charged. She stands at the front door and honks until someone comes outside to sit with her or she gets to come inside. I don't intend on ever letting her sit on eggs. Will she still get mean this spring? There isn't a goose or her mate (who once a nest has been started) who won't flog, hiss, nip and otherwise be sneaky biting nest defenders during breeding season. We have a 2010 Sebbie gander who is scary when you need to raid the nest. It's a two person job. The rest of the year he is indifferent to us.
