Tips for getting pigeons to lay eggs.

Do you have any tips on getting or picking out a female? Me and my friend just can't figure it out!
Well, the hens will typically be a little smaller, and have a thinner neck, head and beak, and the vent bones will be farther apart. I say typically because there are always exceptions. One other way is by looking at the toes. What I mean is to basically leave the middle toe in a normal position and bring the 2 outer toes together up against the middle toe and examine the length of the outside toes. In hens the toes will typically be an equal length and in males one toe will typically be longer than the other (again this isn't always true but very often it does hold true). One other way I use is to hold the pigeon upside down and then pet the legs down towards the tail... you usually have to do this a few times to get the bird to settle down. Typically the hens will leave the legs rested down when you do this and the males will kick one or both legs back up (it's kind of hard to explain this process in words haha). This generally works better with older birds. The 2 best surefire methods are 1, if it lays an egg its a hen haha, and 2, dna sexing. But once you get more experienced you can usually get a good idea just by looking at and observing the birds. Hope this was some help to you as I'm not always the best at explaining my thoughts.
