Hello, I hatched some Rhode Island Red x Golden Laced Wyandotte chicks almost 4 weeks ago and I'm pretty sure which are the boys and which are the girls (although some I'm not 100% sure about). I thought that if Golden Laced Wyandotte crosses could be sexed so quickly, why not the purebreds. So for those of you that have Wyandottes or Wyandotte x chicks, I hope this helps you!
Firstly, I've seen on the internet that they're feathers grow at slower rates. Females grow feathers quicker than males. I personally don't think this is the case. If anything I think the males tail feathers grew quicker.
A couple of days ago I had a close look at the chicks and most of them are clearly either a cockerel or a pullet.
This is what made the females obvious:
Here are the things that made cockerels obvious-
So far it looks like 10 of my 16 are pullets and 6 are cockerels. 3 of the 10 pullets I'm not 100% sure about yet. Their combs were large like the cockerels but pale like the pullets. They also have bigger wattles than the pullets but smaller wattles than the cockerels. I've counted them as pullets though. Either they are slower developing cockerels or fast developing pullets.
I hope this page helps Wyandotte keepers that aren't quite sure!
