Tips on Shooting a Racoon

If you do not have or if you cannot afford to buy a live trap, you can make one. Only thing is the ones I know how to make are not live traps........If they get trapped they must die to come out of it. The easiest one I know of is drilling a hole in a log or large timber/board about an inch and a half to 2 inches in diameter. Drive nails at angles from outside the hole so they point in the hole and down towards the bottom. Then place food or a shiny object in the hole. The coon will not let go of what is in the hole and can't get its paw back out due to the nails. You may have to adjust how far in the nails go into the hole depending. Let me know if this was completely confusing and I can try to explain better.

I prefer a .22 rifle with a shot to the head. Never failed me before. However, next year they will get a .17 HMR to the head..... Ever seen a full soda can get shot with one of these? The energy one of these small rounds packs is very impressive.

Young Heritage,

I just looked up the .17 HMR. It sounds interesting because the .22 isn't usually powerful enough to kill woodchucks unless they are pretty close but I don't want a gun with too much power. Do you have trouble finding ammo for it? Also, how loud is it? I shoot my .22 at woodchucks all the time and it doesn't draw any attention. Is it similar?

you can shoot them between the eyes . and i have shot lots of them beside the ear never no trouble either way.good luck keep after them you catch one there is more keep traping for a week or so after you stop catching to make sure you got them all.

.22 magnum works good out to 50-75 yds further then that .222 or a .223 works well a .22 hornet will do it out to 100-125 yds

It is a smaller caliber but twice the volocity at 2550 FPS. That is alot of energy in a small package. It is notorious with showing the red mist when the target is hit. You can take out a coyote at 100 to 200 yrds no problem. It is really a varmit gun and even thou Coyotes are varmits, they are on the larger side.. I do not think a woodchuck would stand a chance against a .17 HMR round. Ammo is easy to find here in North GA and online. More pricy than a .22 round though. If it is any louder it would not be by much. It is no where close to being as loud as rifle round larger than .22 caliber. A .223 is much louder than a .17 HMR. Just my opinion

If you are worried about noise just get a ruger 10/22 and convert to fully auto and send 100 rounds at them. JK, not excatly legal to own......
