Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

Pics
I think my brown egg is not fertilized because it’s clear, but it does have an air cell. Debating on removing it now or until Day 18 or 14 if it’s for sure that obvious compared to the others. I took a picture of one egg on the same day as the brown in comparison. I’m on Day 11.

I agree with @Mylied, I toss the ones that are blatantly clear on day 10 unless it's a Marans maybe, some of the eggs that are like candling rocks it's more of a sniffing for viability than a candling. lol

if you put a Narragansett tom over a bronze hen then the boys will be bronze and the girls will be narragansett although this one might be harder to distinguish at hatch. but the chocolate one would be pretty straight forward!
I do know by the second generation with the barred black and trying to get just Pure black not barred black that we still have some little chocolate hens popping up... so its a fun thing. I do like it when I can tell folks yup thats a girl before its 7 months old
Very interesting. I have a narragansett tom but my hen is a holland white. I usually just get some poults to grow out each year since I haven't had luck with her eggs. The two are mostly big lawn ornaments. Lol.

ours are very good at the fertilized eggs thing, and a couple hens have actually managed to hatch some for us, the rest of the year they are a glorified alarm system. anything goes on they start barking! they are so much fun. oh and great for the freezer too.

Air cells always develop. It grows as moisture leaves the egg. Even in unfertilized eggs. That egg looks clear. At 11 days you should see veining. It won't hurt to keep it in but I toss them at that age.

Thank you both. Decided to just go ahead and crack it outside. I’m guessing it wasn’t fertilized? The egg didn’t stink and neither did the shell.

If by need you mean for my tummy then yes. I feel bad having to cull my roosters but I only have space for 4 roosters. So my 6 month old rooster or cockerel has been caught and will be processed by next week or so. Gonna try to give him tons of protein filled treats til then.

I'm in the same boat always hatch out around 100 chicks each year and about 1/2 of that are bound to be roosters. I can keep 2 maybe 3 at the most since I don't have many girls. The rest have to go in the freezer if no one wants them and most people don't want roosters. They find a good one and stick with it lol.

what do you do when there is an empty incubator? Fill it back up of course!
Chicks will be due 3.13 to go with our run of ducks set last week and the turkeys will be due 3.20
Most of the chicken eggs are from our flock so I expect Lots of necked necks(heavy on the black of course) and some brahma crosses that should produce half necked necks because they are in with a necked neck rooster. Oh there are 3 marans egg from a local source, and I picked up some turkey eggs from the same source, some of them should be hald broad breasted so that might be exciting? The other turkey eggs are from my flock and I am hopeful for more silver. This will be the last turkey run for a while.

my phone thinks that "a" and 's' are so close that they should be interchangeable with the majority of them being 's'

Ohhhh I should have realized that, I thought it was short hand for some crazy breed 😂
