Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

This upcoming Sunday I plan on going to pick up 2 dozen eggs from someone an hour and a half away who has Ameraucanas from Paul Smith lines. I probably won’t have room to set them until the Gypsy Hen Eggs hatch on the 10th so they’d be an April 1st hatch if that ends up being the case.

I have been watching some FBCM auctions on ebay, which is insanity. My thinking goes back and forth like this:
👼 I have a bunch of BCMs in the incubator right now that are only on D4, and I won't have any idea if they're even viable until these auctions are expired.
👿 The last batch were all infertiles so these ones probably won't even develop. Besides, you aren't even satisfied with the egg color on the ones you have.
👼 But I already spent all my budgeted egg money.
👿 Who's gonna know??
👼 But I don't need more chickens, I already have more hatching than I can keep.
👿 Just sell the extras.
👼 If I get these now, I won't have an excuse to hatch again next year.
👿 Next year does not exist, there is only now.
👼 You're evil.
👿 I am you.

Hahahaha we share the same logic. If you win one from a Chasin Shade Farm, ask her to double box them. 😅

I found someone an hour away who breeds Birchen Marans, so I’m going to pick up a dozen of those in 2 weeks and since I have some from Gypsy Hen that are from totally different bloodlines I’m over here thinking about how I could grow them all out and breed them. As if I need another project. 🤣

Debating on putting more olive eggers in my incubator after this* hatch. But not sure if I should wait a few weeks or clean and repeat 😂

okay so I know that after one or two generations it’s best not to breed them or you could run into genetic defects. My question is, does the same rule apply if say,
Rooster (a) + Hen (a) = Hen (b)
Rooster (a) + Hen (b) = Hen (c)
Rooster (a) + Hen (c) = Hen (d)

hope that makes sense. With that scenario, should I stop after producing Hen (c) or Hen (d)?

I'm afraid I don't know much about line breeding. I'm sure there's a forum around here that can help you tho!

I've been trying to learn about breeding and genetics as I have a couple projects I'm interested in starting and it IS a bit overwhelming!

This one seemed like a good intro to starting with a trio:

I'm sure there are lots of good threads, too!

I'm not sure about line breeding either and most of my friends that are breeding for SOP locally still try to bring in new lines most of the time, though I know some of them still breed father to daughter that's about it so I'm no help.
