Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

Okay so it was dead. Positioned wrong. The air cell was on top its head was at the bottom. The yolk hadnt been absorbed or whatever that gooey stuff was.

Sorry it didn't make it! Malpositions are tough even when you know about it and try to assist. They're really difficult assists.

I also think it was a male. Gonna believe it anyway. I think I am just gonna help the others.

Doesn't mean it was shrink wrapped. Membrane does odd things on chicks that pass away. Here are a couple of great resources for assisted hatching if you haven't read them already and that's what you decide to do.

Okay update. The remainder 2 olive eggs were dead. Not sure why because their heads were in position near the air cell. There was blood. Could they have hit a vein? One was actually olive egger color the other was white.

The white egg I tried helping hadnt even absorbed it’s yolk and it was still breathing but blood was every where. It didn’t make it. I feel like I should have left that one alone, but it was also malpositioned.

I have one last chick who was also bloody, I will see if it makes it.

I'm sorry you lost some. When you help, you have to go very slow. Like make a breathing hole, wait hours, check the membranes for vessels, wait more, etc. If you see blood, stop.

21 went into lockdown. 15 hatched and are fluffy as can be. 1 is still in the maybe will live maybe won’t.

Thank you. I did not know that. I did skim some of the articles on here about assisted hatching, but I guess that’s something that needs to be read calmly and when you don’t need to do it right then and there. I will be going back and reading it in detail and not rushing.

Overall, I’m happy with the ones that hatched. It was a good learning experience. I learned a lot of “what not to do” ‘s. I will be buying more thermometers to set around my entire incubator since i know there were some cold spots. Especially during lockdown. I felt like my thermometer kept going up and down. Mostly down.
