Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

Last year I learned with Cluckndoodle from LilyD while watching her ducks take DAYS to hatch that as long as you see them making chewing motions, they are still actively absorbing the yolk.

it’s unbelievably clear with ducks but even still so with chickens. I’ve used that tip ever since and never assisted too early and left many to hatch successfully on their own I would have thought needed intervention.

So true! I think that was my first hatch-a-long. I learned SO MUCH even though it wasn't my first hatch. It's incredible how much you can learn just from watching other people's hatches! For example, I learned that I wasn't the only person with a hatching addiction and the answer to, "Should I get these eggs?" is always, yes!

It’s definitely not zipping like I’m used to seeing. It’s just throwing its head around in there like trying to get out the hole instead of chipping at the shell.

My remaining egg out of my doomed batch (5/6 clears) is a quitter. I’m guessing by the size and development around day 11-12 or so, but it’s brain wasn’t in its skull. Anyone else ever see anything like that before? I could still see small vessels when candled so left it alone for a couple of days, but when no growth was apparent and there was a funky feathered shadow upon candling again, I cracked it. I didn’t have a great feeling about those eggs to start with so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised... good thing I’m picking up Icelandic eggs tomorrow and silkies sometime over the weekend!

I was just reading an article about chick development. Turns out their brain is outside of the head and slowly makes it's way in as the chick develops.

I put in 10 different assorted eggs from my flock not sure who laid them, but hopefully I get some feathered leg chicks... Looks like we will be getting no more bantam polish and sebright cross chicks because ALL the Polish eggs are infertile now. So I guess I have the two chicks and that's all I'll ever have
