Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

Would you assist this chick? All its hatchmates are out and in the brooder already. Pipped early yesterday evening and has enlarged the hole but doesn't seem to be zipping.

I personally think the membrane looks dark and if the chick is pecking repeatedly at the same hole and you didn't make it larger then it looks to be struggling to get free. Since it's the last egg that's another reason for me to think it may need some assistance. I would carefully open the air cell and apply some coconut oil, warm water, or antibiotic ointment without pain reliever to the membrane to see if there are still blood vessels receding.

I helped the chick out in my steamy bathroom and all seems to be well! No blood and the yolk was absorbed. Right now s/he's chirping loudly and flailing a bit in the incubator. It seems my first assist went ok.

lol, scratch my last comment. I guess I was late! I'm glad that your assist went well!

Aw! Of course I enjoy every moment with my toddler as he is, but I cant wait for him to grow up and help with the homestead. I hope he loves birds just as much as I do.
That just means they're old enough to help out! My daughter is 13, perfect age to help clean a chicken coop. lol
They are not too into the farming life. Lol. They do love to hold the baby chicks. My younger will help build things and mow.

Yes this is the baby that I helped! I will check on her again in a couple hours and make a decision about the cord. She is alone right now so I'm not worried about anybody picking at it or anything. She is so precious! My lil baby. Hopefully she's a girl!
Until a crow assume she is. That’s what I’m doing with all my Silkies.
