Roofing is your friend! You can't overbuild for predator protection, and mud is a mess. In winter, chickens hate snow, so they will stay in unless you shovel the stuff.
Plan to at least cover your run with netting to keep raptors out. It won't help with other predators though.

I covered my entire run with chicken wire. Although our main predators are fox and skunk. We have spent a long time predator proofing it. We put the chickens in a large fenced area for them to scratch and take dirt baths
