I'm experiencing the same thing with my CX mixes. I bred my CX hen to a Blue Orpington and got one splash and three black pullets. I just hatched out some chicks from those girls and half of them are feathering in barred. I have no barred birds at all here, so it had to have come from the CX.
My CX hen came from' big r' and they used' town line hatchery'. Do you know what hatchery yours came from?

No, I don't, I got the CX from Tractor Supply. I was quite surprised to see the barred feathering. Although it's not nice crisp barring, it's more of a patchy mottled looking blue barring.
yeah some of mine look polka dotted, some are kinda gold laced and barred. Of course it won't let me load any pics.
This year TSC are using Hoover's Hatchery, not sure if that's what they used when you bought them... i was just curious if it was common to most hatcheries.

On a sad note on of my white cx mixed hens was dead this morning. All purple, comb and skin, so I figure her heart gave out... I did weight her 8lbs 5oz.. she was hatched last Easter.

@Molpet I'm sorry to hear about your hen :( I lost one of my younger CX crosses the other day. She was the biggest of the group too. Unfortunately, my flock has not been very welcoming to this group and tried cannibalizing them :/ I did manage to separate them before anyone else suffered any major injuries.

These are my original crosses, CX x CCL. I hatched them last summer. At that point, I didn't care who was dad, I just wanted to breed them.

This next group is the younger group. They hatched between late December and early January. Their dad was crele orpington. I'm down to 1 Cockerel and 3 pullets.

Sorry you lost one too... I had the incubated ones in a split coop during the warm days at 3 wks... i had 4 broodies raise some in the coop. So far only 2 chicks had any issues that looked like a hen tried to scalp them, and those were broody raised.. I did have one that eventually committed suicide on his 4th attempt... at 3 days old he left his mom and joined the month older moms group, until I shagged him back to his mom... then a couple of days later I found him cold and lifeless on the coop floor, I thought he was dead but he gasped when I picked him up and stuck him in my shirt.. then a few days later he was caught in his moms breast feathers. she could hear him and he was swinging around like a pendulum as she look frantically .. finally he was missing, I had been gone 2 hours at the store... I looked and looked and finally found him hanging by his wings in some chicken wire.. I couldn't revive him that time... same chicken wire had been there for 7 broods

Sorry to hear about your hen, nice weight on her. I took pics of some of the chicks today and two of them are now looking laced and dotted as well! I also have one reddish chick and one buff colored chick.

Nice birds! Maybe one day all of us CX mixers can swap some hatching eggs. Here's my breeding group.

Gorgeous! All of mine seemed to hatch out all white with black spots. The only one that really has any color is the roo from the younger group. He has some good barring on his wings which I'm assuming is from his dad. Here's the younger group's dad, Braiden.

Oh he's handsome! I used a Blue Orpington cock for my original cross. I'm hoping to keep the white skin from the Orp, as I prefer that to the yellow, and also that yummy dark thigh meat the Orps have. I'm thinking your CX must be dominant white. I believe mine was recessive white as all I got out of that cross was BBS. Although obviously they are also carrying various recessive colors and patterns. I have big batch of the same due to hatch this week, can't wait to see what I get.

This is a great idea! If I was to raise these birds for 4-H, do you have any data on weight and feed? I have done CX for my entire life and basically, have it down to a science.
