Today's temperature = # of eggs.

Here in Jacksonburg West Virginia it was 13 degrees yesterday and I got 7 eggs from 22 layers of mixed hens.

Right now in Farmingdale, Maine it's 7 degrees- with windchill, it's about 15 below zero!!

I have 9 hens, and I've had 5 eggs so far today. 2 from the easter eggers and and other 3 came from the plymouth rocks. I wouldn't be surprised to go out in a bit and see that my buff orpington has laid one too! I should add, they are in an uninsulated coop with no added light.

It sounds brutal and makes for good stories and bragging rights. But anything 0 and lower feels all the same to me.

Cold and Cold. But yes there should be an icicle emoticon at least seasonally. Good idea!

I'm surprised and heartened by the girls and my roos doing so well.
20 years ago we lived in Anchorage, Alaska and I would know if it was a "cold" day if I walked outside in the morning and my nose hairs immediatly froze.

Other than that - cold was just cold and you really adjusted to it and lived with it. Of course we didn't have chickens then. I would have worried about them in those temps. They do amaze me at what they can endure without complaint.

It was -3 at 6 a.m. this morning. Four eggs from five pullets, three Barred Rocks, one EE (a pretty little pink egg). Zelda, our EE that lays a mint green egg, was holding out on us today.

You guys make where I live sound like the tropics.

. Here, I have been complaining about our below freezing temps and no sun for the last couple weeks (along with sleet last night) and lots of people on here are having to deal with sub zero temps. I will, from now on, be greatful that my temps are in the 20s
