Today's temperature = # of eggs.

Yeah, don't complain! We've had:
- 3 water pipes frozen, thawed with a plug in electric heater blowing into the wall.
- 1 split water pipe (IN a 2x4 where it went along the wall) that caused a nice rush of water out the crawl space for who knows how long
- A frozen washing machine drain pipe (could still be frozen for all I know, not willing to run the washer and have it flood the floor again)
- And the current unresolved problem, no heat on the first floor. Wife thought it was the thermostat but it is functioning. Figured it was the valve on the pipe at the furnace not working. Got a new one. Determined that the motor in the old one was OK but the valve was stuck. Got that freed up but still no water flowing. Figured maybe there just wasn't enough water in the pipe (grasping at straws) I decided to connect the drain to a pressure water source to fill it (which should be automatic but maybe if there isn't enough water, the pump can't do the job). Since the people that put the system in weren't smart enough to put a drain on both the outgoing AND return pipes so I could remove the back pressure of the closed loop, I removed the valve and tried pushing water through. No go. Which means, near as I can figure, the hot water pipe is frozen somewhere. Given the stupid way it was installed, running in a chase along an outside wall, I have no idea how to thaw it.

2 degrees warmer and 2 fewer eggs

Here is the USDA egg size "chart"
Jumbo > 71 g Xlarge > 64 g Large > 57 g Medium > 50 g Small > 43 g Peewee > 35 g

So your Favs are running on the high side of Small whereas mine are Peewee to Small with the occasional 'mid-range' Small. The little Cubalayas are pushing up into the same range.

Now compare that to Yue's 84 gram egg from today - WEIRD texture, like it was made out of papier mache.

No flash so the texture is easier to see, it is a whitish egg. It is like that all over.
I have to think that one felt a bit odd on the way out.
Her 82 gram egg yesterday looked perfectly normal (except the size!)
Yue is an Ancona and her usual range is low 50s!

Woah dude! Sorry for your troubles.

I was watching the AM news and got on to ask how much snow you guys got. They aren't talking about Vermont so just wondering if you got as much as everyone else up there?

I also need to add one more fav (total of 3/3) yesterday. kids brought it back when they tuckecd them in.

We have a girl that lays one that is wrinled like yours. Well, I should sy she did, whe has not done it in a while and she didn't always do it. I guess their "shell maker" just goes whacky occaisionally.

He'll probably have to shovel out his internet connection to answer... Nah, It looked like everything north of Connecticut was just getting a moderate 6-12" or less... My in-Laws live near White River Junction, VT and even they didn't look to be getting more than a 12 inches.

Bostonians on the other hand... whoah...

I guess their "shell maker" just goes whacky occasionally.

Yeah, that's what I figure as well. Just like the abnormally large eggs, For instance Yue laid again today but this time it was a much more normal 52 grams and looked like a regular egg.

Thanks for the hug

Left at 6 to skate, got home about 10:30. Then let the girls out of the coop. Spent the rest of the day ripping stuff apart after trying to be gentle. Hard to do when the chase is made of drywall screwed to chip board with 4 pipes (heat, hot and cold water for the shower) behind that at unknown distance. Can't exactly rip into it with power saws. Even after I opened it up AND with a propane torch on the pipes, no water flowing. At least I no longer have to worry about the water pipes to the shower freezing again (that would be the split pipe). Only thing left I can think of is the heat pipe is frozen in the "workroom" next to the mud/laundry/bath room area. The wall at that level is below the enclosed porch on the front of the house so it is cold. Given that is baseboard register, I'm not sure how it could freeze since it is not trapped inside a chase but if it isn't that I have NO IDEA.

We got about 8" of snow yesterday. Another 8 overnight and today but that was all blown snow. I need a wind tower. If the wind is going to pull snow off the ground and roofs then dump it where I have already cleared, I should get something from it

Really feeling sorry for those farther south that got the 30"-36" and especially for all those whose homes were destroyed or seriously damaged by Sandy. A lot of them aren't even back in their houses yet. Gotta be a real emotional run away train. Hang in there BYC pals!!

Did I manage to post all that stuff yesterday, including pictures of the odd egg and NOT post my temp and egg count?? Must be losing my mind.

The low last night was 35 and the high today (w/ rain) is 42. I got 5/14 from my girls. Puddin Puff: Bache is about five miles east of McAlester, OK.
You are close by then. I grew up south of Mena, AR.

Gifa - you really aren't too far away either in KC.

We were 42 cloudy& windy most of the day and rainy in the pm. 5 eggs before lunch and 4 more by bed time. 9/17. guess they decided the yucky day wasn't a good laying day. Bruce - my girls don't like you theory. Hope the burst pipes haven't flooded your computer and you at least got the heater working.

I am getting more eggs of recent! The daylight hours are starting to get longer. It was getting dark around 5:00pm and now doesnt get dark til shortly after 6:00pm. The sun is also coming up earlier in the morning. My guess is that mother nature is playing a role in my increased egg production. I'm up about 4 or 5 more eggs than usual daily.

I got another 40 eggs out of @ 60 hens. Today was another nice day with highs @ 32. I'm cutting my lights as long as the days are nice and sunny.

warming up here in north western pa mite be in the 40's almost time to tap maple trees and start making syrup! 4 eggs from my 8 sex links they've given us 4-7 all winter every day and it stayed in the negatives for awhile.. no heat or lights just straw stacked around tthe perimeter they seem to like it
