Too Early for Feb Hatch-A-Long Thread??

How does one get the hard, dried, crusted goop off of a chick in the incubator? It’s tiny wing is stuck to its body. Eye lid is stuck closed on one side.
Honestly? As long as the yolk is fully absorbed and everything looks good I hold them right under warm running water in the sink. Few seconds of that alternated with a few seconds of gentle wiping. Obviously I'm very careful they don't ingest any water. Once they're clean I dry them as much as possible and pop them back in the incubator to finish drying.

Lined up and sitting in its cup/seat. My daughter is babysitting through tomorrow to see if this keeps it in place.

It was slipping to the outside, so leg was being pulled outward.

Very good to know! Have a jar of coconut oil sitting next to the incubator for helping the others out that were shrink wrapped.

Coconut oil is still often my go to when I'm assisting, I just try to make sure to reapply it often enough that it doesn't harden in my longer assists. Warm water works as well but it evaporates very quickly and is more likely to chill the chick. I have used both with success though. :)

House might be too cold. But going to try that shortly. Miss having a heater! Tis 🥶

Aww, I hope it works! It didn't work for me but it was very severe and from an injury. There was sooo much swelling with my chick. I feel like yours has a better chance at a recovery! My rooster, Peg Leg Pete is actually still here, he just only has one functioning leg.

Poor dude! Must be hard to chicken like that. He’s very pretty though. Love the colors.

I thought so too but he manages pretty well actually and I figured as long as he wanted to fight, who was I to tell him no, lol. He was hatched under a broody hen, lots of issues ensued for this little guy, he was attacked so I brought him inside and raised him alone and he still managed to pull through! He's an Iowa Blue, still young but he free ranges with the rest of my flock now.

So you are all having new fluffy butts and I am over here in Ireland trying to dig french drains and dry out the chicken yard from the very wet winter we have been having getting very jealous! Last of the drains goes in tomorrow now that the gravel has arrived....so guess who just ordered some Lemon Pyle Brahma and Silver Laced Wyandotte eggs to be delivered next week :lau. March hatch-a-long here I come!

We used to have a rooster named Peggy too! He was a New Hampshire. Still one of my favorite roosters ever (after dozens). He got some baling twine wrapped around a leg as a young adult. As a result of that injury he walked with a noticeable limp the rest of his day. Miss that guy to this day.
