Too hot for chics in SC?

We made a lil pen for our 4 week old chicks and bunny yesterday. After awhile we noticed they were all panting so i put a box with a opening on the side so they would have shade. I guess i never realized it could get too hot outside for chicks.

if they are panting i would take them inside for a day or 2 until it starts to cool down!!!

Yes, it's very easy for chicks to overheat. They need shade, plenty of fresh water, and a coop set-up to allow air movement.

Move them to a shady spot where they can get a breeze. My chicks are about the same age and doing quite well in SC.

They have been out later in the evening before, that was just the earliest they have been out. SO i will wait for now on to take them outside

Surely,your lil pen is in the shade?It's very hot here in texas too with high humidity and it is not going to cool down till november.My coop and pen are in the shade or the chickens would certainly never survive the summer.

Took one of my little 8 wk. old silkie chicks over to my in-law's house yesterday. They're in their 80s, so they keep the house pretty warm. Tinkerbell (the chick) began panting a bit after just ten minutes. I figure their house was about 80 degrees. Like you, I was a bit surprised, since chicks generally require more heat. It gave me the excuse to make a quick get-away at least...

But yes, I would definitely make sure ample shade (and fresh water) are always available when you put your chicks out...I'm sure in your area you guys get some major heat...

Yes it is hot...but give them shade...water and I like to throw in a ice bottle for them to play on.
