Total newbie seeking tldr on "getting started" with chicks!

Depending on where in Portland you’ve set down in, you probably want to be aware of the local chicken laws.

I have a Portland address, but I’m outside of Portland’s city limits in a part of unincorporated Multnomah County. I am not under the City’s rules.

But... I probably have way more predators than folks in Portland proper. When I free range, I have to keep an eye on the local hawk population. I had a Cooper’s hawk attack last year, and the bald eagle pair hung out uncomfortably low in my fir trees. Last week’s late snow showed that raccoons still check out the integrity of my coop. Coyotes walk right through, or right up the road. So.... it’s not just dogs. Having a secure coop and run is important!

(I love Naomi’s on Powell for supplies. Wichita on Johnson creek is great for bulk stuff.)

Also, chicken math totally got me this year. I have 10 three week old chicks that I got as day olds from MPC. At three weeks old, they’ve outgrown their generously sized garage brooder. My new run extension won’t be ready for two more weeks. It’s not the best situation, so take care to have things fully ready before you get them!
