Toulouse Geese Thread

I was in love with Jamie Carson's gander at the show I just went to. Won grand champion of the show. He always seems to

He is gorgeous, Do these geese develop leg problems when they get older, or do they just look heavier than they are?

They don't look to have leg issues, and they are very well kept on an acre of pasture. All were walking really well. His oldest pair is about to be retired and are over 7 years old.

I think they look heavier than they are.

I was thinking that probably just the way they are built, Their body type makes me think of Rouen ducks. And i guess how they are kept would make a difference too. I don't know how well Delaps would make it here in our rocky mountain terrain. Although I sure would love to have some, Not to be confused with the Rocky Mountains. we live in the Blue Ridge mts.

You sound like me. I passed the Rouen ducks at the show and commented that they are Toulouse ducks lol. Also same way with the Flemish giant rabbits. Those are really Toulouse rabbits :gig

How cold does it get there? It's really bad here and they thrive.

Lydia, dewlaps are prone to arthritis issues later in life because they are so heavy. Exhibition females run about 25lbs, and the males are a good 30+lbs. They also have shorter life spans than lighter breeds.

Thanks, aoxa!

They are also prone to maggots in their feathers, aren't they? :sick

What is their average lifespan? Any idea? I want my girls with me as long as possible. They are really a part of the family now. Everyone commented on how tame they were. They were the only geese not hissing at passerbyers. Instead they chattered. Tilly calls out when you say her name. Rosa doesn't, but won over Tilly - which was expected. She has the brown eyes. Comments were not written about the eyes, and Jamie Carson said that the points deducted would be very minimal. :idunno

If your dewlaps have access to water for daily cleaning, they are not likely to get maggots. The average lifespan is 15 years, as opposed to 20 years for lighter weight breeds.

Glad your girls handled the show so well!!!

15 years is still very long. As long as some dogs :)

Yes they did really well. I was proud of them! Though I got smacked in the face at coop out by both of them. They REALLY wanted to spread their wings. They were playing airplane take-off as soon as we arrived home.

I wasn't talking about the cold more what they have to walk on. The ground is very rocky, I go out weekly with a shovel and scoop as many rocks out of their walk way as possible, but they [rocks] grow out of the ground.

So far no feet problems but it is always a concern. Thanks for the info.

Oh okay I got it. Rocks growing? SO weird..

I can't relate to that. Mine only walk on regular pasture, but I'm sure it could create an issue.
