Toulouse Geese Thread

It's a good thing you caught it, or you'd been wondering why it died. I would just tape (gorilla or duck) that whole seam. My Guineas would pick apart a seam on the roof of their coop and boy what a mess. I just put new truckers tarps on their coop and don't you think the wind picked up to gust of 32mph. It looked like a comedy seen!! It's tough working alone. These geese are getting so big, I don't think they will be able to stay in that trough much longer. I don't think I'll be able to wait for the wood to dry out and then stain.
Wish I was closer I'd come and help.I am not good with a hammer but I know how to use a paint brush.

I love gorilla tape I have used it on sharp edges on the metal roofing etc. it works so well.

Oh and same goose found a piece of bird netting and was chomping on it I had to get it out of her mouth. When Missy was young she would chew on anything, chewed up one of my forsythias over the winter chewed every bit of bark off of it killed it dead. If you have fruit trees or anything special in their area make sure to put something around the lower hald to keep them from chewing on it, It's like they are cutting teeth. lol

They grow by leaps and bounds One reason why I let my adults have mine at 3 weeks they were getting too big for the Xlarge dog crate.

Thanks for the offer, LOL! Thanks for the heads up on the bushes! I have knockkout roses as tall as the roof on the house and other bushes around too.Today I'll start cutting the 1/2" wire mesh and get that out of the way. I live in Northern Fl. and

use an open pen, with roll up material for the winter

They are so beautiful!!!!! This is very addicting!!!! May I ask you what do you do with all these cuties? Do you keep them or sell them?
You are addressing jtn right? I only have 4 geese and am not hatching this year.

Great idea on the pen, gives them plenty of air in Summer.

Thanks, if you were addressing me. They are too cute. My original intention was to raise to sell. But, even though theirs was a natural hatching and not an indoor incubation, I have grown too attached to do that now. I will be keeping all 11 of them. We are expanding the existing goose house and they have the run of about 3 acres of grass field. Next season I will do my best to gather all eggs so that we stay at our current number. I may try to sell some eggs then but don't think there will be much market for them here in West Texas. People here are pretty much beef and goat folks.

jtn, I think selling the eggs is a great idea, just don't hatch them. 'Cause if I'm reading you right, once they're in your hands, you won't give them up.That's exactly my fear. Right now I'm building a 8x20x6' high. I hope I don't have to add to it LOL

That is a great size. That will give you about 160 sq ft which, in theory would allow for about 40 adult geese if you allow the recommended 4 sq ft per bird for overnight enclosure. I could fill that up in a single order to a hatchery or a round trip to a breeder.

Yep, I am a sucker for a cute little fuzzy ball of fluff. They may not imprint/bond with me but I do with them and so here I am with bunches of birds and trying to figure out how to handle more.

jtn, no, no, no! with 4 horses, 13 guineas, 3 cats and a Great Dane, I'm not planning on anymore birds (I hope). I plan to put one of those kidney shaped pools in the coop, with a good filter. The pool and filter will have to wait 'til next year, ($$$$). Right now I have bought a good size kiddie pool, that I will put a sink drain in to drain it. I've gotten so MANY ideas from BYC and have learned quite a bit too.

jtn 4sq ft is for ducks 7.5-10 is for geese so she just has room for a little over 20
