Toulouse Geese Thread

Pics
Very cute pics! I will try to fit the extra buff gander we talked about into a box with one of the others, but not sure if they all weigh too much at this point. Otherwise, I'm out of boxes to send separately. They have been thriving since I took them off pasture and put them in yard with the juveniles.

I need to take new pics of my group now that they are integrated. I love seeing them all together. It's a big pile of cuteness!

lol aoxa, please post pictures when you get him.

I did manage to talk Iain (Janet) into shipping a grey gander to us, but yes the buff ganders are hard to locate currently. Which is sad since we are looking to establish a breeding program with them, and have the time and mind set to hatch, grow out and cull those who dont meet the standard. Not everyone is able to handle the culling.
You don't sell your extras as culls for pets?

I will definitely be taking a lot of pictures. He is still very young, even younger than my girls, so he won't be at his best quality (that's a given). Since my girls have quite nice greys in their parentage, I'm hoping that will improve their size - as I've heard buffs mature a lot slower - and are still smaller than the greys at maturity.

I am prepared to cull this gander once I hatch out any better gander. It's a long process, isn't it?

Don't you guys just love how this breed walks? Reminds me of a pregnant woman.

I think that maybe someone should start a seperate thread about the Buff Dewlaps as they're yet to be fully established in large numbers. Furthermore some pictures and experiences will provide more of a knowledge base for them. Certainly their type and size is sometimes not on a par with the Greys although there has been some excellent birds produced but it doesnt seem to be as many lines as I expected.

Personally I feel a serious breeding programme will need a line of good Greys to improve/keep size, type and vigour of the Buffs. The value of the Grey ganders that are split for buff should not be underestimated. These are an excellent way of improving quality of the lines.

Who wants to start it? I don't mind doing it. :)

I could easily get some really good grey females and use a buff male to get some splits, and that way I will know they are split. I know Jamie said this when he hatched them:

We were working on a Buff Toulouse project (breeding a Buff male to Grey females= Buff females & Grey males), though male wasn't breeding early-on so I decided to not waste anymore good eggs... so sent him back to NS (I borrowed him from a Zoo). But, he apparently did breed a little before he left!!! The father of these "your" goslings was very big, though not quite as "full" as our Greys. But, the Grey females ("mothers") of yours are very good. So, these two babies should be nice big birds, with full bodies. I thought about keeping these two, but then thought that you might like them.

Since he didn't expect to get any buffs because the male was not breeding, I'm assuming he does not know which boys are split for buff.

I should ask him anyway...

I think anyone can start the thread and just see how the information grows

Also if Buff Ganders are so scarce then use a very good Grey Gander to a Buff Goose and all male offspring will also be Splits

I'd like to skip that step if I could and go right for the split:p I will definitely consider that option though if this male does not impress when he is mature.

I've emailed Jamie about his record keeping. We'll see if he knows :fl

I'll start the thread.

I feel like crying right now. I'm angry. I get emotional when I'm angry..

Sooo.. Winston, the gander.. We had made a deal.. The guy going to bring him over was going to get $50 for gas for bringing him over.. I was going to send him a gander back.. Now he is requesting at least 1 full tank of gas (probably a pick-up truck), and I feel like that is unfair.. He was going to Kansas to visit his family anyway.. He is getting a gander back from better bloodlines - and now he wants to get a full tank of gas?

Am I wrong to be upset that he has went from asking for $50 to possible $150+?

I know that the gander is worth that alone. But I still have to send him a free one back. Does that seem reasonable to you guys?

Thanks for listening to my rant :(
