time and patience aoxa, LGD's require lots of both.

So we all know, Buddy the goose, right? Well Buddy's not forthcoming on his/her real gender, so I sent off some feathers to a place called DDC Veterinary. I got a message...well, let me just give you the meat of the issue:
"We have not validated the Toulouse Goose with our DNA test. We would need samples from a known male & known female of this species before the test can be validated (no additional charge). We have found that data from different avian species can vary greatly. Would you be able to send us a male & female sample?"
Unfortunately, I can't. We've got Buddy and that's it. I sent the company a response saying I am sorry, but No. I also sent them contact info from Ideal Hatchery where Buddy was from. That was last week. I'm all for getting more DNA Sampling labs started and running in America and if all that needs to help them out with this is some feathers, yeah...I'd do it.
If there is any one of the Toulouse breeders out there that could offer up some feathers -male and female - to this place, let me know and I will let them know. Buddy's a production Toulouse and I don't know if there's enough of a genetic variance to make a dewlap Toulouse sample be incorrect, but I'd like to get Buddy sexed before Spring.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention she chews on the fire wood stacked under the wood shed it's a wonder she doesn't have splinters in her bill. So far she hasn't chewed on the house which is cedar sided just the screen door. Today we had a big scare, this afternoon most of the big chickens and Missy went up the hill behind our house out of their fenced area, I was out side but had walked around front to give my drakes some corn, all of a sudden i hear all the chickens shrieking so I take off running which isn't that easy when there are ducks under foot, got around back as a hawk is taking off so I holler for my dh by the time I got around to where the noise was all the chickens and Missy were already inside of the fence, they must have flown. They were all terrified. Some of my chickens were hiding under things, One was missing and wasn't sure if the hawk got her or not but by roost time she came home from where ever she was hiding. Missy was just as scared as the chickens most likely her first encounter with a hawk. It will be interesting to see if any of the chickens venture outside of the fence tomorrow,. I have no way of closing them up, wouldn't if I could, just so thankful they are hawk wise, and had the rooster to warn them. My bantams were the only ones not out of the fence. besides the ducks and the gander. I think from now on I'll stay with the flock when they are outside foraging,.clm & mrsmagoo, great pics!!! I love the look of production toulouse geese.![]()
Lydia, that is funny stuff. I had to run fence along the front of my house because they kept nibbling on the wood siding. I throw small branches of pine or aspen into yard, which they enjoy chewing on.
So glad everyone was okay.. That's terrifying!!
